My guinea pig is around 5 and a half years old. He’s had calcium deposits (the white ring around his eye) + what I think is a cataract in one of his eyes for a while but today I noticed what looks to be internal bleeding as well. The eye isn’t swollen or bulging and it seems to have appeared overnight.
Does anyone know what could’ve caused it or if he needs veterinary attention? I’m hoping it’s not painful, he seems to be as active as usual and is eating normally.
Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear this.
Yes he needs to see a vet, and as eye issues are considered urgent, please do call your vet today.
I hope he is ok

Yes please call your vet, the sooner any eye issue is dealt with the better, always remember that they try not to show signs of pain as they are prey animals. One of our boys had an eye injury and after the initial incident he was acting perfectly normal but his eye was actually ruptured so he was in a great deal of pain but didn't show it 😢

Me too let us know 🤞
Here’s an update! The vet said it’s likely a burst blood vessel as a result of the cataract stiffening the blood vessels in the eye, but it shouldn’t be causing much discomfort at the moment. They prescribed antibiotic/steroid eye drops to hopefully prevent things from getting worse. His eye pressure is currently normal but if it increases and his eye swells or develops glaucoma it’ll start to cause pain and he’d need to get the eye removed. Hoping it doesn’t get to that point🤞
Thanks for the help once again!

So glad the news wasn't too bad and if eventually it came to having to have his eye removed guinea pigs so cope perfectly well . Take care 💐
