Hi all!

I gotta rush my guinea pig to the emergency vet in the morning…only weeks after the death of my last one (due to a mass, not a contagious illness)

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and what the outcome was, or if anyone had any input while I wait these dreadful hours for the vet to open.

My guinea pig (who turns 7 this year, I’ve had her since 2016 so she’s very old!) has never had a health issue before. She has hooted in the past, but after one strong cough, it would stop and not return for a very long time. She has not hooted in over a year.

However, tonight, I was woken up twice by loud hooting. At first, it sounded like her typical hooting, except she had to cough several times for it to fully stop.

I waited up for a bit and it didn’t return, so I went back to sleep.

Then I was woken up again by a cough! Sure enough, she was hooting again. I took her out and it sounded like she was puffing air out of her nose. I put her back and she was silent yet again.

Most recently, she was doing it again. It was a consistent “hoo, hoo, hoo” and it almost sounded like a baby chimp or something. Then, it become raspier and raspier until finally it was more of a croak— and then she coughed and it completely cleared up. Again. Now she’s silent!

This is the only thing I’m noticing! I keep checking her nose every time she does that last cough/sneeze, and it’s always dry. Clear eyes. Active and eating. I haven’t noticed any sneezing or coughing outside of these hooting episodes, only when she tries to clear it up.

I’m worried sick as she is old and even though this is intermittent, the fact that it just keeps coming back scares me.

Any insight or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated—thanks!

30 minutes after that cough, she’s still completely silent. Not even puffing or whistling. It’s like she’s normal again…hopefully it ends there…but I thought that before and then the hooting started back up! I really hope she’s just had something stubborn stuck in her nose or something :(

Thoughts?

Hooting is generally caused by an irritant in the nose (rather than clicky breathing from the chest which is more concerning) and clears with a sneeze - something like hay dust for example. However, it is always best to have it checked by a vet.
I hope she is ok

One of my girls has done this from a very young age. I find I sometimes notice it after snuffling in hay or something stressful like being at the vets or being unwell. It got really bad at one point and she had x rays and even a heart scan and luckily everything was clear as my vet was worried about heart disease. Better to get it checked.
