I wonder if anyone else with blind/partially sighted guinea pigs with cagemates have noticed this....

Angus (sighted) always has disgustingly grubby ears. Hamish (partially sighted) always has clean ears.

I've noticed in my other boar pair they both clean each others ears so my only guess is that Hamish can't find angus' ears to clean them! Angus must be keeping Hamish's clean but he can't return the favour.

Anyone else have any clues?!

Not blind/sighted piggies but when Storm (RIP) was ill, Misty got progressively grubbier - it really showed as she was a PEW. We assumed she was trying to clean Storm as she couldn't manage it herself.

Interesting! I am really finding it an education having a special needs piggy as it adds another dimension to their interaction.

I think I may have a blind piggy.

Hi , I posted the thread that involves sow bullying-- it's in the behavior forum too.
Anyway, I think one of my 2 sows may be blind or partially sighted. Could you please tell me what some of the symptoms are and what they behave like, if you know?

Generally pigs have pretty bad eyesight anyway so it doesn't bother them much.

They would tend to run into things especially if scared or if you move things around in their cage/run. Also they can be a bit panicky when picking them up if they don't hear you first.

Best way to be sure is to get a vet to check their eyes. Also if their eye reflects white when light shone in it or in photographs it usually indicates a sight problem.

My mum had a blind sow when I was a kid. From what I remember, she used to wash herself but wasn't very sociable with the others, I guess cause she couldn't see to wash them back then they washed her? She was called Peggy.
