Hi, please could people advise if you take out insurance and who with ive no idea where to look or know what is a good price or whether it is worth it. I have 1 neutered boar and 2 sows x

As far as I am aware there is still only one company in the UK that does guinea pig insurance and that is exotics direct which obviously means you can't shop around and compare prices. I have four piggies and decided not to take insurance due to the yearly cost, instead I self insure (put aside a small amount each month to cover vets costs should they arise)

I also have a "piggy fund" where I put money each month for vets bills etc as they never come at a convenient time.

I’ve opted for a piggie fund in a separate savings account. My two boys didn’t need to see a vet at all for the first 4 years of their life but in the last year we’ve had various issues, so the piggie fund has worked very well for me.

I completely agree with the other posters that it works out far better to simply put aside money every month into a different account purely aimed at covering vet costs. You can even set up a direct debit to automatically save It for you each month so you won’t forget or even notice.

I find this much easier than paying out pet insurance where you may not even end up benefiting from that investment (years of paying in for a pet that’s thankfully healthy is a financial loss, in fact they are only ever a gain if you are unlucky enough to face serious issue(s)). At least if it’s stored by you there is an option to use whatever is left for the next pets/setup costs when your beloved current pets pass on.
