I have recently joined this forum and I was wondering whether to keep our Guinea Pigs inside or outside, I strongly think we should keep them inside because we live in the North-East of England and it has unpredictable weather. The rest of my family think they should be kept outside but I think that is a bad decision because I am in the process of taming them and if it is outside we will only spend a bit of time with them so it will be really hard to tame them.

Could any of you guys help us decide on this because it is a really important decision.

Definitely inside for the cool/winter months. I brought my girls in a few weeks ago for the winter. We have them in a 2x5 c&c cage. C&c cages are great. You can make them any shape, and size.

That's the problem, they think they can keep her outside for the winter months as long as it has a cover on it. They will not listen to me that it is a bad idea and after the death of our other guinea pig yesterday, I want this one to live long and healthy.

Will you be rescuing another piggy as a friend?
If they are inside:
Easier to spot illness
More interaction
Warmer pigs (below 15 degrees is uncomfortable for piggies)
Less likely to get bored of piggies
Damp causes illness to pigs, so none of that
More chances to take photos
You know they will not be cold

We are looking at getting a new piggy for company soon. I tried to tell them that it will be easier to keep her warm inside and about the damp and lets be honest, I live in England so it is going to be damp.

Guinea pigs are better kept inside for all the valid reasons given by Chief Guinea Pig, plus they get tamer kept inside.
You have made a very good point yourself when you said less time would be spent with them if kept outside.
Another good reason to keep them inside is safety from predators e.g; cats and foxes.
Piggies kept inside are much happier and feel more secure and less vulnerable.

Thanks for all your help guys, I showed my sister why they should be kept inside and she said she will sleep on it and decide in the morning.

One more thing: since bringing ours inside I'm spending a lot less on hay! I was really packing it in to keep them warm outside, and it isn't cheap.

Definitely inside is best although I'm strongly in favour of giving them as much time as possible grazing in an outdoor run in summer.

It is possible to keep them outside but you need to invest in hutch covers, insulating layers, heat pads, additional bedding and hideys and clean them out more frequently so it's not damp in the hutch. Having a shed with heating is another option for outdoor living.
