Hello

wondering what are people's view on keeping your piggies inside? I have a good side c&c cage in one of the bedroom and let them out when it's good weather in their run on the grass.

is this ok?

or are they better and happier to be outside in their hutch all the time?

I love mine being in. I've only had outdoor pigs before but these three are def happier inside ( they have lived both in and out) and I'm happier too as I'm not worrying about them being safe from foxes or too cold or too hot.

They get floor time at the weekends when they have the run of my dining room and they go on the lawn in their run when weather allows.

Inside is great!

Inside all the way for me :D

They love it, I love it and we spend a lot of time together. Most of the people I know with animals out side just forget about them :(

in Italy piggies and rabbits are kept only inside... and the rescue does not give them to us if we want to place them outside. A pet here is usually considered as a member of a family...
I think piggies adapt themselves easily, even in living into a flat in Rome; but the best life is the one spent also in a safe garden when weather allows.
Your piggies are definitely lucky pets.:D

Mine are inside! It's easier and better for them when the weathers not so great.
I live in a flat now though but I do think the pigs miss being out in the run- they used to love the wind!

Mine were outside when I first got them... I was constantly worried about them being cold / too hot / scared/ eaten by foxes ! I love them being inside.. they are part of the family... they have floor time every night for an hour.. wouldn't change it but I know lots of happy outside piggys too..

I do worry about mine outside, but I got a great quality hutch and run and build it on concrete slabs to deter foxes. I bring them into their C&C cage each evening after cuddles, but when they've enjoyed a good run around, I think in this milder weather, they enjoy going back to their outdoor hutch to sleep in peace. I enjoy them being able to access their run outside from their ramp in the day. I am planning on bringing them inside during the harsher months. I've only had them for 2 weeks and they've already experienced torrential rain, a heatwave and thunder & lightening last night and I was hanging out the window checking their cover was secure! What temperatures do people usually bring them indoors and then what temperatures do people move them back outside again? X

Well from what I can see, their natural habitat would go to the lowest of 17 degrees and highest of 25 (which is too hot really) so I think that's a good guide to temperatures for them :)

Thank you, I'll use that as my guide x

No probs! If I'm incorrect I'm sure one of the mods will correct me :))

I tend to just see if I'm comfortable in that temperature without having to have a fan or put on a jumper XD

Many thanks, been online and the consensus is around 15-25. It's dropping to 15 tonight, but think I'll monitor the weather and at least if they're in their indoor cage each night after cuddles, they can always have a cheeky sleepover if we get any dips or highs in temperatures, until they're in for the duration of the harsher months! Thank you Xx

I have mine indoors. We have snakes and wild/domesticated cats to worry about and they would not get as much interaction outside either.

Mine are indoors most of the time unless it's good weather and I'm home and then they go outside. I think they feel safer inside (but only because it's what they're used to). And I prefer them being close by - they're so funny to watch.

With temperature, I'm the same as @Cavy Kung-Fu. If I'm too hot/too cold they must be too.

Long ago I went to the Alps with my piggie Ugo, we were at a camping site 1600m. In the night into the tent there were 5-8 degrees and Ugo and my daughter 4months old seemed to be very fine (especially my daughter). Ugo ate a lot during those days (3 weeks) and with all that mountain grass available he gained some weight.
In Rome, at home I have 15-20°C during winter and 24-26°C in summer with air conditioning on.
Just now I see there are 23°C inside but both (longhair) piggies are into their houses on their warm fleece! I think it is difficult to say which is the range of a good temperature for them.
