I have two gorgeous grey and white female rex piggies called Shadow and Wispa, who I bought last year when they were 12 weeks old.
However, the smaller (yet cheekier!) piggy, Shadow, HATES being away from her sister. Even if we just take Wispa away from her for a minute she'll start wheeking and making a fuss until Wispa is returned to her side.
I'm worried that if, God forbid, anything did happen to Wispa, meaning she'd have to be taken away from Shadow for a longer period of time, Shadow would start stressing and make herself ill.
How can I make Shadow more independent and not as reliable of having her sister by her side 24/7?
Thanks :)

You quite possibly cant - if she needs to go to the vets at any stage you can take them together, this will also stress her out less, speeds recovery time as well - you might find as she grows older she becomes more independent,it just depends on each pigs character.

My two young sister piggies are the same! Well, Ursula hates being taken out first and put in the run alone - sometimes i do one at a time so i can clip their nails etc one at a time then they go into their run. She freaks out and wheeks! Mine are only just over 4 months old, so i hope they do become a bit more independent as they grow. I haven't really thought about what if something might happen to one :/

Maple is attached to Pecan she is forever grooming and kissing her as they are the original pair I first got
Rambo & Patch are attached to Maple and goes mental if you take Maple out.
Lucky is quite attached to Pecan... Bit of weird hierarchy but I do worry what will happen if one goes to Rainbow and how it'll effect the overall group

I always take a "paw-holding" piggy with me to the vets, and you can keep them side by side in those cases where separation because of health issues is necessary. Some piggies simply can't cope with being alone; it often gets a little bit better when they get older.

Thankfully, in this country, you can find a good rescue that offers dating through our rescue locator on the top bar, so even if one of your girls dies at some point, there are good options for you to find a character compatible girl or neutered boar very quickly.

They are gorgeous! Greetings from my grey & white Rexes, Petal & Princess Daisy (Pictured) :D I love a fluffy piggie

your piggies are lovely and I ditto the above re taking them with you. when George was on his last legs and going to vets for xrays etc he had his wife with him and when he woke up from the anaesthetic she was there to look after him, I'm lucky that the vet ive found understands piggies and the need for company especially when poorlyx
