Hello everyone!

I’m new to the forum and could do with some advice please.

My sister is moving to Oz soon and I’m taking on her 2 guinea pigs Gizmo and Modo. My mum doesn’t like them and if I didn’t take them on they’d end up in a shelter or something and I can’t have that. They’re the cutest little pigs!
At the moment they live in her garden in a double storey hutch. But I live in a flat with just a small balcony so they’re gonna have to move indoors. My sis did have the piggies inside at one point in a C&C cage but didn’t like it. And to be honest when I’ve looked after them when she and her hubby have gone on holiday, I agree. I didn’t really get on with the C&C cage at all. They’re far too flimsy and awkward to clean.

So...

Does anyone have any suggestions on any good cages I can buy that will give them a good amount of space? Not a C&C cage tho. They’re going to go in my living room.

Gizmo and Modo are boys by the way, should probably have mentioned that!

Thanks in advance lovely people x

Zooplus do a 160" cage that looks more like your traditional cages. I will try and get a link.

I think if you don't want a C&C your main option is a ferplast cage. Ideally the 160 for 2 boars. Unless you fancy making your own with wood and perspex... or some people on the forum have joined 2 ferplast cages together to make a bigger space than 160 which I think is the largest size of commercially available cage. Or some people have hutches indoors too. There's lots of info on the forum housing guides.

So they need a minimum of 160?
My flat is open plan living/kitchen/diner so I’m planning on setting up a C&C cage perimeter around the dining area with the cage inside the run/perimeter.
I’m wanting the cage to be a kind of base, but they will pretty much have the whole dining area to run around in because I don’t really use it. I think it works out to be 6x4 or 6x5.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated! My indoor piggies Pig and Pop passed a few years ago and their cage was probably far too small but they use to just run around the spare bedroom free range.

There's always the Midwest, and it can be set up so the ramps slope outwards so thry have easy access to the room. It's built kind of like a C&C, but it comes with a detachable base with sides that are about two inches off the ground.

Ooh I’ve not seen the Midwest. I’ll look into it 😊Thanks for the advice!

I’ve got a while to get their new home sorted, my sis and her hubby are moving mid April so I’ve got a couple of months to get everything perfect for them. They really are the sweetest little pigs and I can’t wait to take them home with me, even tho getting the piggies means I lose my big sister 🙁

I used to have two and honestly, half their use is that they flat pack for storage or moving pretty well. They're slightly more difficult to set up compared to a Ferplast, but I don't think there's much in it.

I like the Midwest but I don’t like you have to buy the lid/roof separate. Think it’ll end up a bit too pricey. I think I like the look of the 160 best, and on that zooplus link above the 160 is actually cheaper than the 140! Extra space for a bit less cost, can’t grumble at that really 😊

Thanks for the help!

You don't have to buy the roof separately? One of my Midwest cages came with it, I deliberately bought the other without it because they were indoors and I had no cats or dogs to worry about getting at them. It wasn't like they were going to jump over the edges.

Oh really? I only saw one without a roof and in the description it said you can buy it separately. I’m probably not looking in the right place 🙈

I think I’ll go with the 160 tho. And maybe get another smaller cage to join onto it in the future. They’re going to have plenty of space to run around in as the please so it’s only really somewhere for them to sleep and to put their water bottle and food bowls

Yeah, I mean if they're only in it to sleep I'm not sure why you'd need a roof or lid. It's only there to stop other animals or little grabby hands getting in.

Giz is happier with something over the top of the cage. Not sure why, he was a rescue piggie who hadn’t had the best start by all accounts. He doesn’t like going in the run attached to the hutch he has at the moment unless there’s a blanket or something covering the side and half the top.
If the cage has a roof I can easily drape a blanket or a sheet over the top and down the back for him to give it a bit of cover, while leaving the door open for him to Bob in and out if he wants to. Modo isn’t bothered at all he’s only a baby, but Giz takes a while to get use to things so I want to make it as easy as possible for him ❤️

That makes sense. In that case, should you find the Midwest Plus (which normally comes with a roof) then it's usually cheaper than a Ferplast. Otherwise, Amazon were apparently doing deals on Ferplast Krolik the last time I looked, but it may just have been the 140, not the 160.
