My daughter is lucky enough to have the most amazing teacher who has guineas at school for her class. One of them is now 7 years old and according to the vet (so I understand) is basically incontinent now. :( She is getting wee burns and needs help (gentle squeeze) pooing. Bless her. The vet recommended sudocrem and she has been trimmed (the piggie not the vet!) around her bottom area and is being VERY well looked after through it all. She is well in herself and appetite and behaviour are normal.

I just wondered if there was a more natural cream that could be used? Many thanks for any advice.

Hiya,

Has pig been checked for cystitis as well? I know she is an older lady but she may have an infection.

Not sure on sudacrem but having googled it some say its ok. If you send a PM to Maryh she is our resident moderator who knows a hell of a lot more than myself so she should know what is safe.

Perhaps changing bedding more often will help this special lady too.

I have used Sudocream recentley and found it to be very good. Vaseline would act as a barrier but obviously doesnt have antiseptic properties x

bepanthen nappy rash cream is supposed to be the best for this. When my pig was paralyzed i used this when she got the occasional sores from lying in her wee. It healed the sores literally overnight. This was recommended by Thistle cavy rescue.
Hope this helps. :)

I've been using sudocrem on Nemo because he got a bit sore underneath with going off his back legs the other week and its cleared the soreness up nicely. O0

Sudacrem,Bepanthan etc all contain chemicals which I would not put on myself let alone piggies.Vasalene is no better as it is a petrochemical side product.

A very good ,soothing and protective salve is Green People Organic Babies salve. This contains no chemicals. It is available from some supermarkets(Waitrose) sell it,and most health food shops stock it. I have been using this on one of my boars who had sore pads from urine scold. The soreness has now gone.I also had a sow with corns on the side of one of her hands, and salve has got rid of the hard skin.

The product can also be obtained from the website WWW.organicbabies .com. They do nice stuff for adults as well.

Hi Mary,

is zinc and caster oil cream ok? I have used this on human children in place of sudacrem and is wonderful stuff so wondered if it had any healing properties for pigs too.

Thanks!

Thanks Mary! Got shed loads of the stuff upstairs un-used...lol Will stop being a hoarder and chuck it out! :)

Thanks, Mary. I get Green People stuff for myself and the kids - it is lovely. The sudocrem is working just fine, but your advice was exactly what I was after - a more natural alternative without the horrid petro chemical base! Thanks.
