Ok, so I cleaned out the boys tonight. Put them back in their cage and all hell broke lose! :{:...

a LOT of rumbling, loud squeeking, snorting, teeth chattering and chasing...Ginos fur on the back of his neck was all puffed out and Gino was yawning :...

I put something down the middle of the cage to separate them and give them some time out, threw in a load of hay on both sides and let them just chill out for a bit. I was so scared.....:laluot_11:

Anyway after about 10 minutes of hay munching the squeeking stopped and all now seems peaceful. Ive taken the divider out and they are now sleeping fairly close to each other, but there still a bit of tension there whenever Gino approaches Jamie he shoves his head in the air and snorts...

Do I leave them to sort this out or have I got to separate them :(

i dont know the answer, but, i would leave them until they get really bad and draw blood, they will probably get over it, my two still do it after 2 years together.

If you split them there may be no going back

oh no bless them, hopefully it was something over nothing and all will be fine. I can't advise really as haven't personally had two boars together. Best of luck with it though

I would leave them unless they start again, a big pile of hay and veggies cut up small and scattered about will help. You may find this happens now and then when they are cleaned out - they need to reassert their dominant/submissive relationship, a few things that still smell of them may help - a tunnel/cosy.

If they do start again, a bit of 'time out' can make all the difference. I have only had to do a time out a couple of times - and it was successful. First time out lasted 6 hours - just separated by grids. The other was overnight as when they went back together after a couple of hours it started again, and by morning the younger one was squeaking his head off to go back in.

How strange for this to happen just now! I would not separate them just yet as they have not drawn blood. I really hope they get on from now.

:... that must have been scary! Sounds like you did a good job at calming it down though, I personally think it is better not to let it escalate - it sounds like they were asserting their dominance as you cleaned them out rolleyes boys eh?!

Maybe next time you clean them out leave some of their grubby beds there so they can smell each other and maybe try not to move everything around so it's a similar set up? Although I know they love it when everything seems new! Hope they sort it out and everythings ok!

Thanks guys. It all seems ok now. This has never happened before so I dont know whats different about tonight.....the only thing I can think of is that I usually put Jamie back in first cos hes the easiest to catch, and then Gino second....but tonight I managed to catch Gino first and he went back in first.

Will remember not to do that again! :...

Jamie has been rumble strutting round Gino quite a bit so I think hes hit his "teens" and is challenging G's position as top pig.

What a scary time that was.

Its all so quiet!

Ahem Gino and Jamie... do you not know that you are not supposed to scare mummy by being mischievous little boys! I hope you two are behaving now and are being good friends

Awwwwwwwwww what a great photo! They are sleeping fairly close it seems, so maybe they will be ok :)

Did you put the hay in after you cleaned them & put them back? Next time you clean them I would put in all the hay & some veggies etc before you put them back in, then hopefully that will distract them a bit & they will associate cleaning out with nice things like food!

I would put that litter tray in, let them get it grubby then when you clean them out put the litter tray back in without cleaning that out for a few hours then clean the litter tray out later on. Maybe if they catch a whiff of it that will settle them down a bit lol :))

Thanks hun, yep everything was all back in as normal.

I think it was the order that I put them back in tbh....normally Jamie goes in first then Gino, but I did it the other way round cos I caught Gino first..and Jamie has been rumbling around him quite a bit lately so hes challenging G a wee bit.

Will try the litter tray because one of them (think its Jamie) pees a lot in the hay tray... little lol! :(|)

Ah it's just that if their food & hay is in there already when they go back in then they may be distracted a bit more when they go back in :)

I also find if I feed them before I pick them up for cuddles etc they are usually less wriggly if they have full tummies :)

It probably was the order, guinea pigs can be very habitual as I'm sure you know! When mine get their tabritis dose in the evening I usually do it in a certain order ( Moonpig being first ), the last few nights when I've done it out of order she starts chattering her teeth! How DARE I do someone else's dose before the princess! Silly Mummy! mallethead
