About an hour ago, out of no where, my male 3 year old guinea pig just started frantically biting one of his toes on his back leg (it’s the toe farthest away from him). I got the flashlight from my phone and tried inspecting it but i couldn’t find anything unusual. I trimmed the nail to see if that would help but no. That foot is brown ish black and so it’s hard to see if there’s any redness. I’m thinking possibly a hay splinter got in his toe but i just cant see anything. And my local exotic vet is closed till Tuesday.

Hi

I am very sorry. Please contact your local vet when they open if the biting continues or if the toe is starting to look swollen and warmer to the touch than its counterpart on the other foot.

You can dab the toe with homemade saline solution as a mild antiseptic if you have concerns about a potential infection from a tiny breach of the skin. Just boil 250 ml/half a pint of water, cool and mix in one teaspoon of salt.

Hopefully, he has just stubbed it.

Thank you SO much for the advice, I think he had just stubbed it because after doing your remedy for him last night, he simmered down almost immediately and this morning he hasn’t touched his foot at all.

How is he this morning?
He is doing great! I did what Wiebke suggested and within just a few minutes he had completely simmered down. And this morning he has not touched his foot at all!🙏🏼

Saline solution is a mild antiseptic that you can make at home in an emergency. It is good to know how you can make it in case you have an open wound or tear. You may have likely washed away the irritant. ;)
