Hi everyone. I ran to this forum not too long ago about my guinea pig Chewie's eye. I had taken him to the vet as all of you suggested and the doc told me I had nothing to worry about. Must've just been some hay that poked him and she sent me home with some cream.
Now Chewie's got a bigger issue and his crazy momma cant stop crying about him.
Chewie is a chubby boy, not in the unhealthy way, but in the way of if i put some of his favorites in the cage, they wont be there for very long. So I did that as i usually do, I gave him some lettuce and a baby carrot but he didn't touch them, all night. Hardly ate his dry food and only picked at his hay a little bit. This morning the food was still in there and i freaked out. I ran to get some spinach and he ate a few pieces out of my hand, picked at his hay a tiny bit and that was that. Hes been drinking water as he usually does, and nothing else has changed. Vets are closed because of weather and holiday and i know i need to act fast but i don't know how. I've heard of critical care but regardless i need to wait for it to be delivered and i don't know what else to do. I'm scared that if i don't figure it out quick, somethings going to happen to my baby. If someone could please give me some advice, i cant bare to know that somethings bothering my lil chew.
Thank you everyone.

I'm no expert. But 1st well done for not ignoring this. I'm this forum there are lots and lots information on situtations as this. pls read them asap. .
I'm sure someone soon will help. x

Don't panic! If you can get him to a vet ASAP that will be best for him.
Stopping eating can be caused by lots of things, but most commonly it's because of dental issues or pain.
Dental issues can be difficult to identify at home as the molar teeth are hidden by fat pads in the cheeks! Can you see his incisor teeth at all?
Critical Care is great, but if you can't get hold of any yet try whizzing up some nuggets and veg or crushing them, mixing them with water and syringing them to him! It's imperative that you keep food going through him to prevent stasis.
And then vet first thing tomorrow if possible! Good luck with Chewie, I hope he gets better soon! Xx

If I need to syringe feed I will put a few pellets in a small amount of freshly boiled water and mash them up. I will then either leave to cool or add some cold water if I'm in a rush. It's a good alternative if you have no recovery food

Hi! Please take a deep breath first and foremost!

Switch to weighing Chewie daily at the same time instead of weekly to get a picture of his daily food intake. If he is losing more than 50g/ca. 2 oz within a day or two, he needs to see a vet. He should also see a vet if he is starting to look worse for wear by tomorrow.

If you are worried about his food intake, you can offer him extra syringe feed and hand warm water. In an emergency, you can use mushed up pellets as long as you prep the 1 ml syringe tip as shown in our step-by-step illustrated guide. A needle-free syringe is available from any pharmacy or vet.
