Hi, I'm new here so, I'm Alan and I'm 13. I own 1 guinea pig, George. He is VERY docile and timid and I cant stress enough over it ! He is 2 in July and I thought "Does he need a friend ?". So what do you think, Does my cavy need a friend ? Also check my post called "2 Piggies" in the general chat section about my housing situation.

Thanks in advance, Alan.

Hi Alan
George is definately a male is he, have you had him checked by a vet, or can you tell yourself? http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm look at the pictures if not sure.
I would definately get him a friend, guinea pigs love friends as they can talk to them in their own language.
It's ok if George is timid, a friend may bring him out of his shell. If you let us know what county you're in we could advise you a rescue centre to get George a friend from. A piggie from a rescue will definately be the same sex and will be healthy, pet shop pigs are not always sexed correctly, and they often have hidden illnesses.
:)

Yeah, I checked the website and hes definitaly male ! I live in Dublin, Ireland btw. Do you know of any sites that tell you about the rescue centres in my area ?

Thanks, Alan

If you get a cavy from a rescue centre, are they not a lot of work ? ? ?

why would they be a lot of work? They aren't the same as dogs you would get from a rescue - perhaps with behavioural problems. Most rescue cavies are exactly the same as you'd find in the shops, but probably in better health. They just need a loving home.
I have a rescue cavy and he's as friendly as the others, enjoys a cuddle and is social.

If George is timid a little friend might bring him put of his shell and he will actually enjoy company of his own kind.

As for guinea pigs from a rescue....why would they be any different to the ones in the pet shops?
A lot of the piggies in a rescue are abandoned, mistreated or just not properly cared for. They would definately be very appreciative of a home that will look after them for their lifespan and look after them properly. It might take a little time for them to trust you because their previous experience with a human wasn't good, but they will eventually trust you if you are willing to put the effort in.
So that shouldn't set you back from getting a "rescue piggy".

Good luck with your George and hope all pan out well - whatever you decide to do!

hoping you find george a friend, a rescue piggy would only need more love, patience and cuddles. i have heard rescues in the UK some of them let you take your piggy to the rescue and let the piggy choose a friend O0 good luck finding george a friend and finding a rescue near you O0 if you get a petshop piggy you need 2 cages a quarentine period of at least 4 weeks, so would give it some thought. good luck and hugs to george :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi Georgie-porgie ... welcome to the forum.

You are very kind in thinking of looking for a friend for George. As he is an adult male, do think about getting a rescue piggy to be a friend to him.
Obviously not a female, unless George has been neutered, but perhaps a baby male. Rescues are usually very good at pairing up piggies and I am sure if you contacted a local one to you that they would be delighted that you were caring enough to offer one a home.

If you asked them then I am sure that you could take George along with you to see who he bonded with.
Let us know how you get along!
