I have recently changed my boys over to fleece, and its going really well! although they have decided the triagular cosy houses ive made are more fun to sit on that in (typical:)) ) I noticed when they wake up the usually have a good scratch i assumed that was just because they slept on uncomfortable wood shavings, but they are now doing it more than ever! I am ofcourse keeping a check on there skin for irritation and on their eating and drinking. When i got them they had lice but that was treated and i always keep an eye out for more... Is there anything i can be doing? (I'm not trying to use this as an excuse not to see a vet... if there was anything visibly wrong i would take them to the vets ASAP)
I also wondered about treating them with invectromicin.. (or however you spell it) as a precaution... is it safe or is overuse bad?

hi

to be honest if you cant see any problems (hair loss, red skin creepy crawlies) i wouldn't worry too much. it may just be a waking up thing we stretch they scratch. as long as it doesnt get any worse i would leave them to it.

i believe you can use ivectermin(sp) as a precautionary measure. i think its once every 3 months.

I would have your boys checked by a vet if you are worried about the possibility of mites.

If they have mites, they will need a full course of ivermectin, i.e. 3-4 rounds spaced 10-14 days apart. Just a one off round won't help catch any hatching eggs in the skin.

Thanks, people on here are so helpfull! I cant see anything on the skin, and I'm sure i would notice... i took one piggy to the vets a couple of weeks ago for what turned out to be old scars! :P silly me. when the vet said it i felt so stupid... id been worried about tumors or something! but i will make sure i keep a close eye on them. My vets is just up the road so always easy to get to. :)
