Hey everyone, so I recently found out I'm pregnant and I've read very conflicting things about if you can handle your guinea pigs while pregnant.
Is it safe? I've been getting my partner to handle them until I have a decent answer because I'm definitely not risking the safety of my unborn child.

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy! I don't think there's anything to seriously worry about regarding your health (and that of your baby) due to your piggies, so long as you observe good hygiene practices. Possible problems are thankfully rare and can easily be avoided entirely, have a read of this thread: Human Pregnancy And Guinea Pigs

Firstly many congratulations on your pregnancy. It’s natural to be anxious to protect your unborn baby and thus forum is a great place for advice.
When I became pregnant many years ago and before this forum existed I was anxious to do nothing to risk my precious babies. I took advice from doctors, midwives and the vet and was assured by all it was fine to handle my piggies and their bedding etc as long as I observed common sense & basic hygiene principles. The excellent guide on this forum reflects the advice I was given.
Try to enjoy both your pregnancy and your piggies.

There is no specific advice or concern regarding guinea pigs. Reptiles, cats, sheep all have specific advice, piggies nothing. Basic hygiene principles is all that’s required, as we should be doing anyway, pregnant or not... (cos I totally never eat with a piggie on my lap...).

Obviously specific concerns then speak to your midwife but, that’s what she’ll say ( because I am one and it’s what I would say, lol)

Congrats on your pregnancy! I've never head any guidelines about handling guinea pigs when pregnant (only concerns I have heard about are risk of toxoplasmosis from cat litter and risk of salmonella from reptiles/snakes.) You should be fine.
