Hi everyone! My name is Mahid, and my guinea pig's name is Muchu. Muchu had a partner Puchu, but soon she died. The vet said that Puchu had problems from birth. Muchu is 1.5 years old, and recently some genetic problems with his leg occured. I kept him with my rabbits, and they loved each other. Recently, Muchu has been really sad since I separated him from my Rabbits, and I am wondering if I should get him another partner. Since he has genetic problems, it's not contagious, but I am afraid he might get hurt if the other one is too speedy or jumpy. Please tell me an option, since I have no idea what to do now. Muchu can barely walk, and he's really depending on your opinion right now!

By the way, I separated from my rabbits since he has problems with his legs, and I am afraid the rabbits will accidentally jump on him.

Has he been seen by a vet?
I note you say his previous partner was female. Is Machu neutered?
It would be good for him to have a new friend, but if he is not neutered he must not have a female friend. He can only have a male friend so that you don’t end up with a pregnant female.

It’s good you separated him from your rabbits. Guinea pigs and rabbits must never be kept together. You are right in that rabbits can injure guinea pigs but there are also other problems. Rabbits and guinea pigs have different dietary needs and also rabbits carry diseases harmlessly to them, but those diseases can make guinea pigs very ill. Do make sure your guinea pigs and rabbits do not mix with each other.

Hi Piggies&buns.
The vet has seen Muchu, and he is the one who has said his problems are completely genetic. We have nothing to do about it. And yes, Muchu will be Neutered. I am thinking of getting him a male and female friend, since he really loves company. Is it okay if I do?

No that isn’t ok, I’m afraid.
You cannot keep two males and a female in the same cage as it will cause the males to fight with each other and they would then all have to be separated.

You can only keep two males together, with no other piggies in the cage.

However, as he has lived in the same cage with a female before, he may never want to live with a male piggy.
If you were to try to get him a male friend, and the bonding failed, then they would need to live in separate but side by side cages and not have any physical contact with each other.

or

If you want to get him a female friend, then he needs to be neutered firsr, have a six week wait after the neutering so that he is infertile, and then he can have a female friend. He can have two female friends if your cage is big enough - that is a cage needs to be 180x60cm to have three piggies (one neutered male and two females
please do not put females in the cage until he is neutered and six weeks post surgery safe

Adding More Guinea Pigs Or Merging Pairs – What Works And What Not?

Hi, thanks for your info. But I am scared that the other guinea pig might hurt Muchu. He cannot move very much now, and his legs are in bad condition. I am afraid that the other guinea pig will run and jump over him and might accidentally hurt him. But again, thanks a lot for your info.

Piggies with limited mobility are able to have a friend in the cage with them, they are still just as social as any other piggy, but a successful bond comes down to character compatibility and other piggy understanding that he isn’t mobile

Looking after guinea pigs with limited or no mobility

Oh wow! Guinea pigs must be really smart creatures.. But since I'm 16, I have to ask my dad before buying. He is also very concerned about Muchu, and I am certain he will be happy when he sees this post. Thank you so much! I can't express how much you have helped me

Hello and welcome to the forum. I hope you can find a friend for Muchu.
