Hi All,

We are soon to bring home two baby boars to 'join' our existing piggies and will now have two quite large (160cm x 77cm) cages in our "Guinea Pig Room". We would ideally like to stack the cages but for safety reasons don't want to just sit one cage on top of another.

Has anyone made anything/used anything they've found to be ideal for this? Looking fo ideas both homemade and bought, but within a reasonable price range? I've seen C&C cages stacked but we have a dog and I'm not sure this would be sturdy enough (just in case!).

Any ideas/photos of your solutions would be greatly received!

Thanks In Advance,

Sonia

@slizzie91 If you use the connectors and also cable ties C&C cages can be pretty sturdy. I have a stacked 2x7 C&C cage and not long after I made it I tripped over and flew into the side of it. Quite a few connectors fell out but it remained in one piece.

There's always options to make it even sturdier with added bits of wood or metal supports.

Do you mean creating another level that the piggies can run up to, or stacking two separate cages one on top of the other?
If it is the latter, I personally wouldn't advise it. It would really creep out my boys if there was an unseen piggy above/below him!
If you mean to create one, two-leveled cage, possibly crafting a wooden shelf above would be the safest option. You would also have to run a few wooden/metal supports along the edges, too, to stop it from sliding about.

I've got 3 cages stacked, you might get some ideas from this!

The bottom C&C is 3 x 5 on one side but narrows into the alcove, loft is 2 x 1. The table is home made I can just crawl under it to clean, the legs came from B&Q. Because the cage is 3 wide one leg has to stand in the cage, the vet bed is 2 pieces to get round this. If you are only having two cages you can use higher legs which make the table easier to clean under. The commercial cage in the middle is a Little Friends 160 x 80, the metal parts on this are very strong, it has a home made loft and shallow ramp. On the top we have a 4 x 2 C&C which is cable tied to the lid of the commercial cage for safety. I can just reach the back for daily poop picks and a change of fleece but a thorough wash down needs a step ladder!
None of the boars have ever taken much notice of having upstairs neighbours, although I do seem to be lucky in having 6 very laid back boars.

This is really Awesome! I'm definitely taking notes. I was afraid of stacking cavy cages in the same way as I've seen them done in my searches but really thought about it. We keep adding piggies and we'll have to move our beds! Good note on the boars lol, I put some time into thinking about it and know our boars would have to be the bottom. My nerves would be frayed for rambunctious boys on the top.

Favorite part of the room is your very cool rockin' rock :)

@piggieminder thanks for that! I have two commercial cages, and our current thinking is to construct our own table/bench type structure to go over the floor based piggies on which to sit the second cage! Not sure if it is then important to consider whether my sows or boars go on top!
