IC flare ups in season?

hi all, hope all your beautiful piggies are well, unfortunately my della is currently on day 6 of yet another AB course for treating another UTI i feel so awful that shes had so many in her short life and would appreciate any advice on how to reduce this as much as possible, if that is even possible? she is obviously just pre-disposed to them but wondered if there was anything i could try to see if it makes a difference!

my question today is actually about IC.. i do believe that della suffers from this and i think I'm right in believing stress can play a factor in this?

we have noticed that it seems to flare up around the same time the girls come into season.. during this time luna is way more moody towards della, chasing her around more than usual and just generally being more of a b*tch

i wondered if the extra chasing and being bossed around as well as heighten hormones could be a cause for flare ups and if anyone else with IC pigs has noticed this in their sows?


** when we do notice the crying while weeing, we start della straight on metacam and within a day or two shes okay again, hence why i believe she does have IC. this time though we noticed as well as the crying, her wee smelt very strong and everytime i picked her up she would almost ‘leak’ on me bless her, so we went straight to the vets and was given the ABs to treat the UTI, hopefully a couple more days on them and it’ll clear up!

if anyone has experience with this please get in contact, am i doing the right thing keeping them together? i don’t want the stress making della ill but also they are sisters and have a good relationship outside of this, what i think is, normal dominant guinea behaviour

Have you been prescribed just the antibiotic or also metacam or any other meloxicam-based brand? I would also recommend that you start with glucosamine to see whether that can bring relief - it takes several weeks to build up but it helps to reinforce the natural glucosamine layer in the walls of the urinary tract. In piggies with sterile (i.e. non-bacterial) cystitis, it is this natural layer of glucosamine which keeps the highly corrisive urine from coming into direct contact with the raw tissue in the walls that is mainly affected and that accounts for the pain and inflammation (metacam is an anti-inflammatory).

i would absolutely hate to spilt them up it would be the last thing id do however was just worried that luna may be playing a part in her sisters flare ups which i thought may be cruel to put her through.. they are a year and 2 months old at the moment.

so yes currently della is prescribed 0.3ml metacam x2 a day, 0.2ml co - trimoxazole x2 a day and she was given 0.09ml gabapentin x2 a day for first few days after original appointment to take until she was no long in pain when weeing which i stoped after 2 days as she got better but started back up last night as yesterday i think all hers wees she cried during going.

i already cover her veggies in one capsule of cystease a day and have been doing this since re-introducing their veggies after dellas non eating phase due to baytril.

there probably isn’t much i can do to reduce how bossy luna is towards her sister, we are hoping to help rehome a boar in the next year (once we are ready and have expanded the cage) which we are hoping will reduce luna bossiness towards della but i think it’ll end up being spilt between della and the new pig!
