Dear All,

I have 2 boars who are currently separated as I observed Max picking on Monty (teeth chattering etc). I have tried to put them back together a few times but Max chases Monty and Monty looks terrified. I do not like the idea of keeping them as separated bachelors long term. I am fond of them both so ideally would like to keep them both.
I have taken them both for a check up at the vets as one option to consider is having them neutered in order that I can pair them with females.
I have had a lot of good advice from this forum and would value your opinion on neutering.
I am also aware that some people have had success with bonding behaviour so I will put a seperate thread about this in the behaviour thread.

My lad was living with an older boar. When the old timer died, I didn't think twice about getting the youngster neutered. Everything went well and he's now living happily with his mam and auntie. ;)

I'd suggest neutering them and pairing them with sows. Awareness about guinea pigs and anaesthetic in vets is much better than it used to be. Talk to your vet about it. Mine rigs all animals up to a heart monitor and checks carefully for any signs of a bad reaction to the anaesthetic.

Cross gender bondings are the most stable of all pairings and any boar's lifetime dream come true!

The crucial point is to find an experienced vet in piggy neutering with a good track record, as otherwise the risk of post op complications is much higher and can easily turn into a real and very expensive nightmare! We have got a piggy savvy vet locator on the top bar. Otherwise, you could contact BARC in Barnsley (who are on our list of recommended rescues) for who they use, especially if you consider rehoming girls from them; I know that they occasionally have neutered boars themselves.

The other point you need to take into consideration is a 6 weeks post op wait until your boys are 100% safe to go with girls. I have the baby from a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar, just to prove that particular point. Most good rescues won't rehome sows to live with neutered boars earlier, exactly for that reason.

If you have second thoughts, you could consider boar dating under expert supervision at one of our recommended rescues; character compatibility together with an age gap goes a long way towards stabilising a boar bond. You also have the rescue to fall back on if things go wrong at some point for some reason.

Thank heavens there are people who are willing to run rescue centres.

I am for neutering as I am hoping to add a neutered boar to my five girls some time in the future.
You never know your bachelors might just be happier being with a girl then each other

It's not an easy decision to make as I don't really want to put them through the surgery. However, I don't want to carry on as now - keeping them separated.
I don't regret getting boars though - and I definately don't regret getting them from a resuce Centre. I don't agree with GP's being on sale in pet shops and I'd never buy one from a pet shop.

If you have the room... why not try boar dating?

I would try boar dating personally. Any op is risky. A reputable rescue would find your existing boars a suitable friend to bond with. I won't own anything other then boars
