Hi. Am still attempting to solve my "five piggies in separate hutches wouldn't it be nicer if we could all just get on" issue...

I had a thought. I remember from years gone by when we bred the occasional litter (which we don't now) that we had two females that would not get on. Someone recommended adding male and theyd happily cohabit, since the male is the dominant character. The person who advised us had tried this many times all with a no squabble success rate. We tried this and it was successful.

I've been thinking therefore about getting one of my boars neutered and trying this again. Since neutering doesn't seem to affect male behaviour, I'm assuming this would still work. However, Humphrey is a sensitive soul, and Hector's getting on a smidge so I'm concerned about the op. Which brought me to my plan..... What about an already neutered boar who may be homeles in need of a loveing home? Thus I solve my hutching problem and my desperate urge to home more piggies in one go, and give a recue piggy a home....

I thought this seems a fine idea, if it doesn't work I have at worst six hutches instead of five (once you get to five on more to clean out isn't so much more) and at best three hutches! I reckon I could fashion a mesh style divide to give the boys company together, and have the happy clan in another hutch.... Either way a piggy would find a loving home.

It seems a bit too easy. Thought I'd post and see i there were any suggestions...

Or maybe I'll just buy them one of these each... [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gupi-V3-0-Interactive-Guinea-Pig/dp/B000KBZUAE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1257896914&sr=8-8[/ame]

Bo is a rescue pig and he was already neutered when I got him. It's great, all the benefits and none of the worries about the operation (for me...). I'm definitely pro neutering as it can bring good quality of life to many pigs, but if there is already a neutered boy that needs a home out there, why put your boys through the risk of operation when they already have a good life with a friend? (Humphrey and Hector live together, don't they?).

I am currently trying to convince my other half to let me have a boy who is going for neutering who is lovely I think it will help bring my girls together who cohabit but do not love each other if you know what i mean!

That's what I'm hoping. A male presence, may calm them down toward each other... And if not I have another piggy anyway. Shame! LOL If it didn't work out I'd assume he'd proabably live with at least one of them, which is company at least.

Hopefully, you can find a neutered boar.

I had my Llewelyn from HopperHaven in Redditch (South Birmingham) where they neuter as a rule, as they prefer to rehome cross gender pairings.

Even if you can't get both girls to work together, you will end up with at least one girl happy!

You could always try and have one of your boys neutered (your "sensitive soul"), so you have two separate cross gender pairs - in my eyes that would be the safest and most successful option. As a rule, male-female pairings are very stable, and both sides very happy, as dominance issues are not an issue.

I'd like to, but if I'm honest he's just a bit well, drippy! I love him very much, but he isn't the stockiest, he isn't the fastest, and he's just a bit sickly looking!

He's always been in good health, but I worry about him in terms of strength and anaesthetic.... I think he'd love a girlfriend and so would Hector, maybe I should ask my vet what he thinks.....
