Hi,

I have recently acquired a baby pig called Stig and he seems to have something wrong with him when he wees. He doesn't do it all the time but we have noticed that he squeaks slightly when he goes to the loo and we think it might be a URI.

I have heard that cranberries can also be good for pigs. Can someone please advise?

Thanks!

Riff Raff is recovering from this problem right now. I have been syringing cranberry juice and water several times a day. I know juice contains sugar, but right now this is the priority, and you need to get plenty of fluids going through. There may be some on here who will shoot me down for recommending cranberry, but Riff stops squeaking when going to the lav if I use it.

You also need to get a course of septrin (human antibiotic).

Sending him loads of healing xx

Syringing lots of extra water certainly will help and some do use watered down unsweetended cranberry juice.
A visit to your vet is needed to get the septrin as Lucinda says. If your piggy isnt a good drinker it is a good idea to syringe water to him whenever you can, especially if he is likely to be prone to URI`s.

Best of luck :)

Agree with the above, a visit to the vets is needed. You could feed him veg/fruit with a high water content as well so he gets more water in him like cucumber, celery, etc.

Gosh so sorry to hear this news 8...
Sending healing wheeeeeeeeks and loves from us both, please keep us all informed after seeing your vet !
GOOD LUCK STIG x>>x>>x>>x>>x>>x>>

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the advice. I will certainly try the cranberry juice and the cucumber for extra water. He is drinking a lot of his own accord as well so it definitely looks encouraging.

If he is still squeaking by the end of the week then I will also take him to the vet's.

Thanks again!

Hope Stig feels better soon, sending wheeks and hugs xoxoxoxo

I love the name Stig, anything to do with Stig of the Dump (showing my age now! lol)

I thought it was more like The Stig from top gear.......:))
Really hope he feels better soon. My girlies send piggy kisses :)

I have had this problem with my sows mainly. They wee and then as they are coming to the end of it, they bring their bottoms up and squeak a little as though it is hurting them. All my sows and one boar with this problem came from the same breeder.

How is Stig today?
Just out of interest, what dried food do you feed them on?
I used to feed mine Gertie but read that it had addictives in it that could lead to kidney problems. Not saying that this is Stig's problem, but just wondered.

Hi,

Thanks for all your messages. We have tried the cranberry juice and he didn't like it so we took him to the vet and he gave us Baytril. It doesn't seem to have worked though so we're going to have to take him back.

But Stig is doing well and he's eating, which is a good sign. It looks like it might be a problem with his poops anyway. We noticed today that the weeing was okay but he kept squeaking when he does the other thing.

Anyway, will keep you all posted. He is named after the book by the way...when we got him he looked so messy and a little bit like a runt so we thought Stig was a good name...

Baytril did nothing for Riff. But Septrin is very good. Can you ask your vet for that?

And there was me thinking he was named after Stig on Top Gear! I've replied to your other thread! :)
