Hi I have 4 guinea pigs smudge, pebble (2 boars who live together) and patches and cinder(a boar and recently found out sow). Patches and cinder were sharing a hutch for quite a while till I realised cinder is a sow. I got her from a rescue(when patches cage mate badger died) who were pretty confident she was a he. They were sharing a cage for long enough that I should have already got babies, patches is 5years so I'm thinking he may be to old to fertilise? So there could be a chance she's pregnant and I'm worried if she is she could get dystocia. Eny advise, what should I do? Thanks

Is it possible for you to post pics of his/her bits in close up? For a rescue to get sexing wrong is not very common - adults are so easy if you look up their skirts. If you have problems posting pics you are welcome to email them to me at the rescue and I'll post them for you.

Pigs do not lose fertility as they age so there is the chance of pregnancy. How long have you had the pigs? Do you have much history on them from the rescue? If you let us know where you are based hopefully there is a cavy savvy vet in your area that can be recommended.

I have had smudge pebble and patches all there life I just got Cinder for company because patches friend passed away. Cinders def a girl but Its wierd there hasnt already been babies I must of had her since Octoberish last year. The rescue doesn't specialise in piggys but they did say there was a boy and a girl so I think they gave me the sister rather than the brother. No history other than that. I'm in north England.

I Have a friend who is studying animal care who confirmed it.

It's not uploading photos sorry

To upload photo's register free at www.photobucket.com takes a second. Once you have registered click upload and choose the photo's you wish to upload from you computer.

Once upload has completed click on the picture, over at the bottom right hand side it says share this photo with a column of 4 below it.

Where it says IMG click on the box next to it it will cope automatically, paste the cope in your post and the picture will appear.

Alternatively it'd be worthwhile emailing Suzygpr and sending the pics by attachment. She's fabulous with Guinea Pig's really know's her stuff - she can also advice re-pregnancies as she frequently get's mis-sexed piggies handed in from pet shops not being able to sex Guinea Pig's correctly.

Ok thanks I will email Suzy with a pic. I am 100% sure she is a girl but it's always worth having a third opinion since she is the first girl piggy I have had but comparing her to my boars her bits look totally different . Your piggy looks so cute on the picture! Has enybody ever had a female pregnant for the first time at over the 8months and had successful deliverys?

Welcome to the forum! Sometimes, especially with young guinea pigs, it can be hard to tell if they are male or female.

Maybe taking her to the vets for a check would help.

cumbria, I'm going to put a photo up later so you can all check her bits out lol

Here's a pic of Jenna's pigs - I'll post the pics for sexing when they arrive.

I had a guinea pig named Maggie who was pregnant when she was about 7 years old. I was shocked because I didnt think they could get pregnant at that age. This was a long time ago. She had never had babies as far as I knew. I got her from a rescue organization. I had to have a c-section done for her by an exotic Vet. Unfortuately, the one small baby didnt' make it. It didn't even take a breath because it was too soon for it to come out. She/He only had a little bit of hair. But I couldnt' wait any longer as I was unsure of her due date and I didn't want to chance her going into labour and having the baby end up stuck.

Maggie lived almost another year and recovered fine. But she was really old so I think that is why she passed away.

Have sent pics to Suzy now I think she could even be just come 2year not sure tho rescue centre wasn't sure the age when I got her ,they said just over a year.

that doesn't look like any of my boars, they have very clear pokey out boy bits

So everyone is certain she's a she? :-) I thort so now I just need to wait and see if she gets fat then I will have another problem to deal with.

Yeh will do :-)) I read somewhere that piggys who have broad shoulders and hips find it easier to deliver, what do you's think?

It certainly looks like a sow to me - how old is she? If I'm understanding correctly, I find it hard to believe that she could have been with a boar for so long and not been pregnant several times already. How long have they been together. Could your boar have been castrated before you got him? Is your boar definitely a boar?

She is around late 1yearold early 2. She was with him for around 6 months I don't understand why there aren't any babies either! :-) I got him from a pet shop when he was about 3wks old. So don't think he has been castrated . He's definitely a boar as he shared his cage with another male for 4 years and no babies and he also definitely has a male part lol
