Hi,

I am getting two lunkarya boars for my birthday at the end of August. I have a 120 ferplast cage from my last guinea pigs that I used to keep them inside for the winter.

This time my parents have agreed that when I get them, they can stay in this cage for a week in my bedroom as a trial. If they stop them sleeping or smell they will have to go outside. But if they don't I can get a c&c cage.

So I need your advice, are your guinea pigs loud? Do they keep you awake? How often should I clean them? Just anything you think would be helpful, thanks :)

As I live in a studio flat mine are always with me. They only wake me when one is being chased and screams. I use towels and vet bed. I remove poops three times a day and wash the towels and vet bed every three days. I never notice a smell.

Thanks! I have seen vetbed before I think that's what I will use if I get the c&c cage :)

Hi to be honest I wouldn't like to keep pigs in my bedroom, within about a week of having them mine had learned what time 'breakfast' is and now wheek loudly for veg at about 7.30 everyday - annoying on weekends!

With regards to smell it will depend on type of bedding And how often you clean the cage out. I use fleece, washed once a week but I have an extra piece of fleece in their main toilet area which is washed every second or third day. I also scoop up all their poop every morning and evening. I think boars tend to mark their territory more than sows which can be smelly!

Vet bed are good, most people with c&c cages use fleece blankets to line there cages. They use snuggle pouches, tunnels eg fabric ones like Kim makes at @justaddpets, hay bag etc all are soft and would be quite :)

I'm not sure how to add links so added pic, people on here say this is a good place to get your c@c cage from also added pic of the kind of tunnels Kim makes

Hi! Like Frankie1990 has said, they wake me up at weekends when they wheek and they tend to have what I can only describe as a mad half hour early in the mornings too, but other than that they very rarely wake me in the middle of the night. Plus no one else in the house can hear them when they are noisy.
As for smell, it's fine if you keep on top of poo picking, removing wet bedding & hay regularly.
I love having my boys inside :)

I have a large CC cage. I use puppy pads then two layers of towels and then fleece. I have a litter tray and I use a paper based litter with baking soda under their hay bag. I sweep up the poops once a day and I add little litter to the pan everyday and dump the whole thing every two or three days. I do NOT smell them at all. I also sleep on the couch a lot (fall asleep watching tv) but someone always turns it off, they are close to the couch. They have NEVER woken me up.

My husband is not a big animal fan and the only thing he has complained about is the amount of space their cage takes up. He would definitely let me know if he smelled them lol.

So I think if you keep the cage really clean you should be good. I have females., are the boys already a bonded pair? If so hopefully they won't make as much noise deciding who is boss. I would let your parents know that in the beginning until they sort things out they can be a little more vocal.

I hope this helps :)

Hi,
Yes the boys have lived together since they have been born :) thanks for all your help

Just be careful with the vet bed, I brought what I thought was a suitable and proper roll of vet bed fleece for the bed room area of my hutch only to find out the fibres can be pulled out very easily therefore if the piggies are eating hay etc on the vet bedding they would be eating the fluffy fibres too which may end up getting clogged up in their tummy's and digestive system leading to very poorly piggies vet visits and costs.
I've heard other stories on here of unsuitable vet bedding so just thought I would make you aware :) the proper stuff is very expensive but worth it I think as it's so soft :) I'm going to get my boys a vet bed for the colder months.

thank you, I've ordered it from dog products direct as I heard some really good reviews from there. But I will be checking it before it goes anywhere near my piggys :)

Just to add. I have read that washing it a couple times will get rid of some of the fluff coming off, which from what I read is also normal on the good vet bed. But what momof3boys got was not the good vet bed and kept coming off even after the washing.

if your hutch has a wooden floor would be worth lining it with lino or stick on tiles so it wipes clean otherwise the wood will start to smell
