I’ve noticed something was wrong with my piggie rye, on saturday she was perfectly fine to my knowledge eating and drinking normally, sunday comes i noticed she was barely moving and not asking for treats or drinking like she usually does and she had a build up of white stuff around her eyes which i never seen like this before than comes monday i wake up and first thing i do is go check on her, she was in her tree stump barely moving i had to wiggle her to get her to move a tiny bit and cleaned the stuff of her eyes. i called and asked every vet around me to get her in but everywhere is booked and i’m not sure what else to do.. i’m currently at work and i’m stressing out about what i’m gonna walk into when i get home. what could have caused this?

I can’t answer what is wrong with Rye BUT she needs to see a vet urgently …..try to find an emergency vet asap
I’m sorry that Rye is so poorly and of course it is very worrying - I can understand your stress and worry - a vet can answer your questions and provide treatment for Rye - good luck

I’m sorry to hear this

You need to step in and syringe feed her to support her system while she is unwell.
Switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh her daily. This will allow you to more closely monitor her hay intake (if she is still eating) but also ensure you are getting enough syringe feed into her each day.

She does need to see a vet. I know that’s not easy in the US, but they are the only people who can tell you what is doing and what treatment she needs.

Ive added our emergency and syringe feeding guides in below to help you

Hi

BIG HUGS

Guinea pigs can take a turn for the worst right out of the blue. Without a post mortem examination at the vets (and sometimes not even then, it is not possible to say what has caused in your case.

However, it sadly sounds like Rye could have been already in the later stages of the natural dying process when you found her.
The build up of white stuff around the eye is likely milky cleaning fluid. Bodly fluids can be released as a reflex as the body breaks down and depending on which way it is closing down and what was the cause. It is a much mroe physical process than you would imagine.

Here is our emergency and bridging care advice if Rye is still there; she will need round the clock syringe feeding and watering as well as keeping warm but not hot: Emergency and Crisis Care as well as Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Please get your piggy to a vet ASAP. If your tell the vet it is an emergency, they will see you. Alternatively, you an contact an emergency 24hr vet (all vets in the UK must have an emergency service by law).
Best of luck, I hope your piggy makes it 🤞❤️😔

I hope your piggy is ok and you are able to get them seen by a vet. Good luck

Hi, is Rye an older piggy or younger? She may have reached her natural end if she's an older girl.
They produce that white fluid naturally to clean themselves with although we don't normally see much of it. The first time I noticed was when my boy on the left did a big sneeze and suddenly had drops on both cheeks... it does freak you out a bit. But if Rye isn't dealing with this herself she's not cleaning or grooming properly. How is her breathing? Is there any chance she could have picked up a chest infection?
We'll be thinking about you x

just a update to this post… she passed away in my lap yesterday night after work it was a long battle of seizures and tiny squeaking… she curled up against me and i gave her tons of kisses and love during the whole thing…

I’m so sorry to hear this. She was surrounded by your love until the end. Popcorn high over the bridge Rye. Take care ❤️

So sorry to hear you lost Rye. She will have been comforted by your love. Sleep tight little one ❤️🌈

I'm so sorry for your loss 😔
Sometimes the only thing we can do for them is to love them and try and help them feel safe and not alone. She is at peace now x
