i have two guinea pigs who live together and are good pals. dodger is...shall we say..not the brightest button in the box. Very docile and a bit lazy and short of the brights. Danny however is an adventurer and is always the first to try anything be that ramps/new food/toys etc

One of Danny's little tricks is to try to escape every single time we are moving him from the run to the hutch. We have a very densely 'grown' garden if you see what i mean-lots of plants/trees/shrubs down one side where he always runs to.

last night he did it and we couldn't catch him for ages, next doors dog started barking and danny was obviously frightened. he was hissing and i have NEVER heard that before from him. We eventually got him and his little heart was beating so fast. My little boy was sobbing his heart out because he was frightened.

I need to stop this happening. We have a triangular run with shelters at both ends and a central door.It is really difficult to get him out of. Has anyone ANY tips at all? i was thinking of putting another 'pen' around the door so if he bolts he is contained-do you think that would work?

I have a little escape artist too. I find the easiest thing to do is herd him into something that would carry him like a paper bag or snuggle sack. Easiest to do by taking away all treats from the run and just leave some in the carrier. You could always put the opening to this in front of the door to the run so if he bolts then he's already in the carrier :)

I agree with Shuvvy. You could also block the doors off and scoop him out. He needs time, it can take a while for new pigs to get used to sounds/smells and you. Obviously having a dog barking isnt ideal, but he should with time get used to it.
