I just rescued two guinea pigs. One is a spayed female and the other is a male.

I have the cage space for another piggie. Should I get another male?

If I’m thinking correctly, you should only add another girl and not a boy as then there will be intense dominance battles between the boys over the female. Typically, it is common to have a herd of girls with a neutered boar. Seeing as it’s your girl who is spayed, you’d have to either neuter the boy and add another girl or get a spayed girl to add.

Two boys cannot live together with females. You can only add another female in your case (ensuring the neutering/spaying as described above is done)

How big is your cage?
And how long have you had your current piggies.

As others have mentioned you can not have 2 males with a female as they will fight.
Also if you have only just taken these new piggies on then it might be worth waiting a while to get used to them before taking on another.

I would also recommend waiting to get to know them before getting another. You would have to get another de-sexed girl if you wanted to get another guinea pig, definitely not a boy. One thing to be aware of which is something I noticed when i got my third piggy was that a third piggy doesn't necessary make for a happy family. they are quite particular who they like so it would be best to get another from a rescue and take your two for a date so you know they are going to get along. It was ages before my third piggy was accepted. She was noticeably left out for a long time.

Hi!

It is always a temptation to get more piggies.

Trios are notoriously difficult; the majority end up with an outsider situation. Adding a second sow to a stably bonded pair is often not successful; a second boar is a definite no no.

You may find this guide here helpful; it gives an oversight on what is more likely to work and what more likely to fail in our ample forum experience. it cannot comment on the individual case but if you bring home piggies on spec for bonding you ALWAYS have to have to have a plan B in place in case the bonding attempt will not work out.

Personally I would leave it at your pair. Unless they are from a good welfare standard rescue with a mandatory pregnancy watch, you need to quarantine fuirst anyway - and the same goes for any future piggies.
