But she is very beautiful, but her habits are not.

We have two female pigs that live together, one short hair the other long, the short haired one Lucy keeps herself clean by using the same toilet area and does not get messy eating fresh food.

The long haired one Fluffy looks like someone has thrown a sponge in her face after eating fresh food and she likes nothing better than weeing where she wants and then lying in it, I have never had to bath a pig so often !
Fluffy even gets dirty round her nose and mouth eating dried food.

Any suggestions ?

Hi btw as this is my first post.

Hiya and Welcome to the forum. Sounds like, and looks like too, you have some great piggies. My girls piggies are a lot less hygienic than my boys lol. What sort of food are you giving them, that gets them so dirty? Sounds like soup! ha ha. Also, what shampoo are you using. A lot of people on here use Gorgeous Guineas shampoo, it is really good, and I'm sure there would be one that is mild enough to use frequently. x

Oh what gorgeous girls you have! My boys are like this, apart from coco. Tufty (american crested) and Ben (Sheltie X ) are dirty little so n sos! They will wee, poo anywhere they want and they will lie in it etc Ben has white fur around his mouth and gets into the same mess! There is nothing you can do to really stop it, just enjoy the fact that you have guinea pigs who put the pig in guinea pigs lol Gorgeous guineas is amazing, you will have fun trying chrissies products and some are safe for constant use! E-mail Chrissie and ask her advice, she is great. Her e-mail address is on www.gorgeousguineas.com/co.uk :))

has she always managed to get a mucky face if not she may need her teeth looking at? They are very cute piggies!

Thank you everyone for making us welcome and for your kind comments.
We use Gorgeous Guineas shampoo so Fluffy always smells very nice even if she is stinking dirty! food wise the pair of them enjoy a range of veggies - we have an allotment so they eat all sorts of lovely fresh stuff, it really doesn't matter what Fluffy has she smears it all over herself, beetroot is the funniest she looks like shes been at the lipstick counter at Max Factor, Lucy however remains pristine. Seriously though to keep Fluffy clean she would need a bath every day and as that would not be good for her we are going to start wiping her over with a damp flannel. Her teeth are fine, there is no overgrowth at the rear and the front ones are white straight and strong (we see them enough when she wheeps with excitement when dinner arrives). I swear that pig could get dirty eating her hay.
Over the years we've kept lots of Guinea pigs at one stage (pre children) we had 15 of them and have never come across such a mucky little pig - she is completely adored and spoilt as all pigs should be and we wouldn't change her for anything.

Hi Welcome to the forum!

You have some lovely girls there!

Are they outdoors? If you have them indoors, you may consider to switch to fleece, as it wicks away the pee, so they cannot lie in the wet. I have a lot less "accidents" with my piggies than before.
(PS: You will need to wash the fleece before you use it for the first time and never use softener, as it seals the fleece).

It is a lot easier for longhaired guinea pigs to get dirtier than shorthaired ones.

Hi again everyone, what is fleece ?

Fleece is a warm, soft thick fabric that is made out of plastic. You should be able to get hold of cheap fleece in places like Asda or Morrisons - it's used for babies.

I have noticed that my guinea pigs do sleep more out in the open since I've switched to fleece. I use a layer of newspaper first and then a layer of cheap bathing towels (mine are from Ikea for less than £1) and then cover everything with fleece. Others use newspaper and shredded paper underneath. For the hay corner, I'm using a plasticrabbit corner from pets@home. The disadvantage of fleece is that hay tends to stick to it and you need to pick up debris and poops at least once daily (spot cleaning).

Have a look at this thread for impressions (especially the end, as many of us have switched to fleece): http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=29854

For more opinions, you may find that browsing through some of the threads in "housing" quite informative.

Awww your piggies are lovely x)x) ,y Eleanor is the same as Fluffy. She lays in her wee, wee's anywhere and you should see her after she has eaten a tomato :o Eliza on the other hand is really clean. I have given up trying to get Eleanor to change her habbits :)

Your piggies are just beautiful... love the before and after of the bath - so fluffy after! :)

One of my mum's pigs is sooo lazy she just goes to the toilet and then lays in it so we have to bathe her a lot too, but she gets so cross about it! Welcome to the forum btw!

Fleece sounds like a good idea we will look at that idea.
Just want to say that the pictures of everyones pigs are wonderful - what is it about guineas that makes them so cute? we think its their soft little mouths and their sheer joy of everything although daughter thinks its the way they wash - not that Fluffy knows much about that!

It's rinse time !

:)):)):))

BRRRRRR! That looks like a VERY thorough shake about to happen!
Wonderful snap!

Hi,

I just joined. I switched to fleece about 6 months ago. LOVE IT! Here is what I did: I went to the thrift shop and bought the absorbant, washable pads they use in nursing homes. I also bought several fleece blankets. I have a C&C cage so first I put down the pad and then the fleece blanket. Every couple of days, I roll up the blanket, shake it outside and put it back in. Once a week I wash the fleece and the pads. The piggies love it, they don't lay in their pee AND it is much cheaper than the pine bedding.
