I am supposed to give my Guinea his antibiotic 2 times a day, every 12 hours. I gave him his first at 7am, and I accidentally gave him the second at 2pm. It’s been about 2 hours after and he is acting normal so far. Should I be worried? Will he be okay?

Please bear in mind the forum is run by volunteers who have their own guinea pigs and lives to contend with. The forum is also based in U.K. and it’s past 10pm. People may be in bed.

I don’t have much experience with administering antibiotics but think your boy should be okay.

Hi

Please accept that we are an independent UK based forum that is run by a moderation team doing this for free in their free time. It is already late evening here in Europe.

There is no excuse for rudeness or swearing. It can result in an outright ban according to the rules, which you have accepted and are supposed to have read during the registration process.

Your guinea pig will be OK. Please give the next dosage at the scheduled time, whether that is a 24 hour or 12 hour rhythm. Regular application helps but you have a bit of a leeway each way (usually plus/minus 2 hours in a twice daily dosage or 3-4 hours in a once daily one) unless your vet insists upon prescription that any medication must be given strictly on time. They should however tell you when prescibing and it should also be noted on the label.

I’m sorry for being rude guys, you’re right, I shouldn’t have said that. I was just a little upset because I saw new posts that got replies way quicker than mine and I kinda flipped out. It will not happen again.
Thank you all very much for all your help and input, it really helped me calm down. I will also call the vet to make sure.

Apology accepted.

In order to ensure that members get a knowledgeable answer and advice they can trust, we ask our members to either just post personal experiences with a specific problem or otherwise give their sympathy/support and a message to please wait until an experienced member comes on. It may mean that you have to sometimes wait a little longer (especially during our UK nighttime) but our system means that the answer you finally get is from somebody whose knowledge and experience we trust.
For this purpose, we have a number of special monitors for this section who have a badge in their signature; this will especially help newbies or visitors who to trust if they are in doubt. But since we all have day jobs, family and our own piggies, we do not have a regulated attendance schedule; we are too small a place for that.

If you have any concerns about your medication and treatment, you are always within your rights to call the treating clinic during their opening times for any clarification or for advice if something has gone wrong with the medication. This will hopefully help you, especially as our time zones differ somewhat.

I truly respect what you guys do here, and thank you, that definitely helped me understand a lot better.
I just called the vet and you were right, they said he’ll be fine and to give him the antibiotic in 12 hours / continue his scheduled dosage 👍
