I've got vetbed in all my hutches now, and 1 of my hutches has 1 guinea-pig in it, 2 of them have 2 guinea-pigs in them and the other one has 3 guinea-pigs in it. The vetbed seems to be fine in all the hutches apart from the hutch with 3 guinea-pigs in it. I started cleaning it this afternoon and it smelt like pee before I cleaned it out and it still smelt like pee after I had. I've noticed it a bit for the past few days but today it smelt especially bad. I'm thinking of going bac to using the wood shavings in that hutch only, because I think all the girls curl up together in the same place and so obviously they are all peeing in the same place and so it's smelling more quickly. I never noticed a bad smell with the wood shavings. Has anyone else noticed a bad smell with the vetbed? I think it smells bad in one of my hutches because there is more guinea-pigs in it. The hutches with the one and 2 guinea-pigs in are all smelling fine and still look quite new but the vetbed is looking tatty and bits are coming off it in the girls hutch

How often are you leaving it between changes of vet bed? Have you tried litter training them at all it has made my life much easy since my girls have become 80% litter trained

I shake it and sweep it every day and wash it about every 5 days. I wanted to try litter training but I can't find litter trays anywhere for guinea-pigs.

Hi I have vet bed for all my boys and I find I need to wash it every 3 days and clean it outI always have newspaper 3 sheets deep under the vet bed. I had 2 pairs and can't leave it longer than 3-4 days *** they start to smell a little but they are so much better than they were on shavings, they all had skin issues and now they have cleared up. And my late piggie Paul had long hair and it always got stuck with shavings but he was so much happier on vet bed. Hope this helps a bit. :) also I have a rabbit corner potty thing that I got in Pets at Home for litter training

Ok thank you I'll have a look in Pets at Home for a litter tray for them

i had this same problem with my 3 guineas on vetbed i went back to shavings in the end tried it for 2 wks and in the end i got sick of them sitting in there own wee and pooh stuck all over there feet and i cleaned it every day and washed every 3 days but soon after putting the vetbed back in it was the same again seemed like the wee mixed with the pooh well you can imagen what it looked like.i find it better for 2 guineas or single but not 3 or more..:(:(

I think I will go back to shavings. The reason I swapped to vetbed is because it would mean less old shavings going in the bin because the bin was getting too full, but I think if it's just one hutch of shavings rather than 4 like I used to do then I think it will be fine. Also they're pulling the vetbed around and moving it and it's just become a big mess in the hutch now. Thanks for the help. I might still try litter training them, just as a fun thing to try.
