hey guys, so i recently went on a 9 day trip with my family. i left my two female guinea pigs with my boyfriend and i constantly checked in on them. he sent me pics of them throughout the days because i missed them so much. they were fine for the first 7 days. the other day my boyfriend texted me freaking out saying that my baby guinea pig can’t use her left leg, she walks with it dragging behind her and one of her eye is red and cloudy. he says that he doesn’t know what happened. i’m so confused with all of this because i just don’t understand how this can randomly happen. i have a vet appointment in a couple days but i just wanted to see what you guys think.

thank you!

I’m sorry your piggy became unwell when you’re away, it must be stressful. The way that eye looks though, I would try and bring the appointment forward if possible.

Let us know how you get on at the vets.

I have moved this thread over to the health and illness section so it is seen more easily.

Glad you have managed to bring the appointment forward as eye injuries need to be seen as quickly as possible. It sounds like there could have been an accident (landing funny after a popcorn or jump, jumping off a hidey etc) for the leg and the eye may be hay poke. Both can just happen out of the blue but wait and see what the vet says. Keep us up to date

Please have her seen as soon as possible; it sounds like she had a bad accident. They can sadly happen out of the blue.

Eye injuries deteriorate very quickly; the sooner they are treated, the better and the greater the chance of an easy and smooth recovery.
The poor girl must be in agony over her leg; again, the sooner it can be seen, the better the chances that the problem can be addressed before any bone knits or a joints swells too badly in case of a dislocation and the damage becomes permanent. She will need pain relief as soon as possible. Could you bring the appointment forward to today?

Her appointment is in a few hours, so i will update you all soon.

it’s very hard seeing her like this because i still haven’t really processed it. i barley got home a day and a half ago and i didn’t really know what to expect. it’s just sad because Precious was so hyper and happy all the time but after all that happened, Precious just sleeps all day.

She still goes crazy over pea flakes though, lol.

Sorry for the little rant, i’m just really nervous and i just hope everything goes smoothly. anyway, thank you all so much for your thoughts and i will update you all right when i know something. :) 9D26D379-5F53-480F-9BC7-FCA929BA243C.webp7DB5C8C6-68F2-4E4B-9365-65118A8B712A.webp

All the best! You are a caring owner; it is hard to see a piggy in pain.

UPDATE: she has a Neurological Disease which is a disorder that affects her brain. her brain tells her to lean to the side, which is why she seemed to be dragging her foot, since then her walking has gotten worse though. the side she leans on is also the same side as her bad eye. which is why her eye is very irritated. the vet proscribed some antibiotic eye ointment for that. and her main medicine to help the disease.

We still don’t know how she got it but i’m going to keep her and my other piggy separated. plus the vet recommended to keep her dry and on towels with food and hay always available so it’s more comfortable for her.

She also has a abscess on her neck :(. but he said it isn’t too extreme yet so i have an appointment on saturday for it to be drained. the vet was very surprised to see so many things wrong with her, due to her being so young, and how fast everything happened.

Thankfully we caught everything early so it should be able to heal properly. but there is still a chance that it won’t. i just have to continue to give her medicine and cuddles until she’s fully healed.

Sorry it’s not good news. Is it the eye that will heal? What are the long term implications of the neurological disease? And why did he say you should separate your piggies?

no, her eye was caused by her not being able to walk right. she can’t really walk so she leans on her left side and tries to scoot herself. it wasn’t good for her eye because the bedding and hay would irritate it since it’s rough. a long term implication is that her head might be slightly tilted for the rest of her life. he suggested that i should separate them because the disease might be infectious. so i separated them just to be cautious.

Is it the neurological disease that’s contagious? Must be whatever caused it though I’m not versed on those things. Someone more experienced will hopefully be along in good time. Fingers crossed she can make a good recovery, even if she has a head tilt.

So sorry to hear your poor piggies diagnosis. Is the neurological illness infectious? If not it seems a shame to separate from its companion. Sending some healing vibes, and hugs for you at this difficult time x

I would recommend to lubricate the eye 3-4 times daily with plain artificial tear gel from the pharmacy rather than tear drops. it is more likely that your girl is no longer able to clean her eye and it could be at risk of dehydrating and ultimately going blind. The gel is longer lasting; ideally you apply every 6-8 hours, but you can up that to every 4 hours if needed. It is not a medication, just plain tear fluid. A stroke survivor piggy of mine had this problem.

Please also keep an eye out on the teeth in case your girl is starting to chew more on one side than the other, which can cause overgrowth. A developing slant in the front teeth should alert you that the back teeth are no longer ground down evenly.

Hopefully it is not infectious, but it is better to be safe than sorry. While nasty bugs are rare in well kept piggies, there are sadly some bad ones around.

Do you have rabbits or are there rabbits living close by? Sorry, there is a good reason for the question.

Yesterday i noticed her eye was becoming a lot more worse so I called the vet and he recommended for me to get ophthalmic ointment, it is a gel. and that has made her eye look better then what i saw yesterday. so i have to apply that for about ten days, 4 times a day so every 6 hours. also, that’s such a strong piggy of yours!

Thank you so much, i have been watching her eat and it does seem quite normal but i’ll look at her more closely.

That question makes me nervous because my brother does have a bunny kept in his room. they aren’t ever in contact though. and my piggy got like this while she was in another house.

She's such a beautiful pig, I am so sorry for her and for you too, since you have to go through this with her. Where is she from? As the vet said (judging by the pictures) she looks way too young for this many problems, so did she have a bad background (pet shop, irresponsible mass breeder)? I really hope she'll be ok, give her as much cuddles as she can handle and keep us updated with the vet.

Thank you all for your kind words, unfortunately Precious passed away earlier today. 😔
