Hi there,

I’m researching just now as we are looking to get a couple of piggies soon so we’ve bought a book which says you should not use woodshavings / sawdust in cages. I didn’t know this as our friends piggies who we’ve been looking after while they are on hols use sawdust. What should we be looking into buying?

I use hemp bedding in my cage and I really love it. I buy Aubiose which is a horse bedding at about £10 for 20kg

I believe wood shavings can be ok (but never sawdust) if they’re un scented and kiln dried (I think) but I think they can be quite drying on piggy feet

Sorry It’s the wood shaving you get at pets at home they use... prob not sawdust, my mistake!
Thanks so much I’ll look into the hemp bedding. Hopefully heading to an adoption centre next week

I use snow flake wood shavings which are dust extracted and extra soft. Thankfully my local pet shop sell it in huge bales. I sometimes use easibed which is a small wood based pellet which I also get from my local pet shop but there is a huge choice of bedding to choose from and other members will have other ideas x

I’d recommend Aubiose. There’s also megazorb and snowflake softchip shavings. If you go for wood shavings please don’t buy PAH brand. Not great. I bought some but ended up throwing away almost all (used about 10%). Waste of money

Does anyone have opinions on Kaytee clean and cozy? I've just ordered some to try as we plan to ditch the woodshavings and go for a paper-based floor substrate when our piggies move into their bigger cage next month. I couldnt decide between the Kaytee and the Carefresh... I'll probably try them both and also the Back to Nature paper pellets, but I thought they looked a bit weird (but maybe good for the toilet tray?)

Thank you I’ll not buy the PAH stuff. The Auboise product I can get on amazon or get delivered so will go for that if better. Still to chat to adoption centre ... I’m thinking piggies might have a preference
