p@h just gave me this hutch free of charge... the guinea pig cottage hutch
http://www.petsathome.com/find/keyword-is-guinea+hutch/product-is-22478#product-detail
it looks really narrow.. has anyone got it and is it ok? ?/
I dont want to complain as it is in box, brand new free etc.. but wondered if it was ok..
Maybe they would let me pay a bit extra and get a better one? All my piggies are in 2 storeys.. although it is longer at 5ft.. I like the 2 storeys as when i bond my older boys who wont go up the ramps with babies, it means the babies can have some time apart if they want..
Thanks, Tori xx

can I ask why you got it free?

because of the hassle i have had from them..I couldnt get babies from a rescue, to bond with my older boys. (who are rescue boys who fell out within a couple of weeks of me getting them). and against my better judgement.(and because my kids fell in love with them, .i wont do it again!) bought 2 babies from them who turned out to be ill.. they paid £250 in vets fees, and gave me the hutch cos the babies have bonded now and are unable to be put with the boys i bought them to go with.. i must say though i have been very impressed with their customer service. They gave me 2 free hutch huggers for the hutches i bought that leaked too! x

yeah, i was also quite impressed when i made my complaint over 'the Thing' not getting fed. These are ttough times for retailers and they'd better get it right on customer service if they don't want to go under!

So are you still looking or 2 baby boars?

I like the design of the hutch but it falls short of the 2ft depth. It is 16 inches in depth where it should be 24 inches. The length is fine though at just over 5ft.

Is it for 2 pigs? If so that extra foot would help and probably balance out on the depth!

I am always impressed by customer services at pets at home, I've never had a problem. :)

I have 2 reserved.. I have to take Stevie and Comanche over for a little bonding session to see how it goes, so fingers crossed x
The lady and I had a long telephone conversation. She has 5 babies and matched 3 to my boys by their personalities. I have chose the 2 quietest.. a lilac and grey but will see when i get there and what they are like. They are well handled, and not ready until next week, but she said that the important thing is that we get the boys matched to the right ones, so i am really excited. x I havent been able to let her know as she is away and when i spoke to her, my OH wasnt sure if we should risk it, so really hoping they are still available... x

it is for 2.. I would prefer a 2 storey though, especially for boars..
Wonder if they would let me return it and pay the difference for a 2 storey..
The height seems small also.. x

You could do. Tell them you are grateful but they need a bigger depth and ideally 2ft high. Although thats not that important but I can imagine not much light getting into the hutch making it quite depressing. I like hutches that a higher so they can move all around. :)

Keep us posted on what happens! :)

I'm really shy and couldnt believe it.. i just went in to stock up on that burgess offer and they were like here you go! lol
Will ask my friend to come with me :)):)) worth asking, I think i will always look at it and wish i had asked, plus the size, being just over 5ft means it would have to go on top of the 2 storeys as i dont have enough room for it.
At the time I just picked it up and left! They didnt even ask me to sign.. and i still have 2 nero 4s on loan!

hmmm I'm very negative about pets at home but i have my reasons...

1. One of my pigs, Noodle, was rescued from them as they were going to gas him.

2. I bought my sister two hamsters from them as a Christmas present (she had lost hers earlier on in the year) and one died two days later.

3. The guinea pig Noodle, had severe ring worm, and was sooo scared, he had actually never seen grass before :( for the first 2 months he wouldn't leave the house (needless to say a year later he really is a pig lol)

4. My mates hamster had wet tail :(

5. Every time I go in there they always have dead fish, i mean is it really that hard to remove them? and why are they dieing in such numbers anyway? we are not talking about one or two here, i counted 15 in one tank!

6. They charge £30 for 2 guinea pigs and £20 for a rabbit...that is rather a lot...especially seeing as most arn't healthy...and i think the hamsters are equally expensive.

7. The people in there have no knowledge whatsoever and are really not very helpful.

8. They tried to sell me a tropical pleck as a cold water algae eater.....

9. And probably the main one, i touched on it earlier, the one in hereford is known to do a regular 'removal' of excess stock...will leave that to your imagination...but I think you get the idea

Ok so that is why I try and bypass them, my local pet shop is brilliant she will get me anything I need, all I have to do is ask and she orders it in!

Dont really know much about indoor hutches so I cant help you there!

i got some tropical fish from them (having no car means its my nearest place unfortunately) and I lost 16 fish.. I was devastated, i know people see them as "just" fish.. but they arent to me.. Yet, my cold water ones from there I have had no problems at all with.
My baby guinea pigs I got, were ill.. 1 was the worst.. ringworm, eye and chest infection. At one point I thought I was going to lose him :(
I must say though that I have seen pics of other stores which look terrible, mine is always clean, all the animals have food, fresh water, toys etc.. but the problem being the places they get their livestock from. All the staff are great too and the managers are animal lovers.
I dont like pet stores and think you should pay a lot for an animal to stop people impulse buying, but I dont agree with their pricing.. for eg 2 pigs used to be £24, now they are £32 i think it is (def £30 something) As they should be in pairs, i feel this is stopping people getting 2.
The giant rabbits are priced at £130.. a breeder down the road sells them for £50. (they have the ad in the shop!) The one they have in has been there for about 4 months.. its sad..
Yet I cant help looking at seeing if they are ok, I'm a glutton for punishment i think.. thats how we ended up with the babies.. after weeks of looking at rescues, who just cant get babies, we saw the 2 we have and fell in love with them. 4 days later, they were still there and the shop said we could have them for £24 when i complained about the price.. even though its everything i dont agree with buying animals at pet stores, i just wanted my older boys to be happy.. now i have even more problems! but i love them x

have you decided what to do about the hutch yet?

o mstori i know how you feel about the fish...I'm having a bit of a bad fish day today i really am, i could actually kill my other half no exageration....

they arnt 'just fish' their my babies and also my pride and joy!

ahhh... whats the matter? mine too! i need to clean my whole tank out as someone switched the pump off and its gone green.. although i dont know what to do.. was going to put it on other pets.. x

urgh.....

i have two tanks, a large one with goldfish and a smaller one with Danio's.

Obviously they have different food due to size difference and well they eat different things.

my other half feeds them in the evening as i tend to forget before i go to bed lol...i do the other two daily feeds (apart from the fasting day of course)...

well last night he fed the Danio's the goldfish pellets...many problems with this as you can imagine...
1. Danios cant eat them...
2. They therefore just disintegrated and now the water is so polluted...its taken me months of specialist feeding and water care to create the perfect water and its all been undone thanks to that bloody idiot...i just dont get how he could have done it and why he would have done it...i really could actually kill him, no joke, he just better avoid me for a long time...or there is going to be blood shed...

he better hope no one dies or he will be in serious trouble..and i mean serious trouble...

its going to take me months to get the water better again, its just horrible...I'm so scared that I'm going to lose one..

and to make matters worse i breed them, so i wont be having babies in a while...they are just so fussy...
