Can anyone recommend me a good cleaning product for the hutch? I want to find a product which I know will kill all the nasties, and I haven't found one which I'm happy with yet.

I've seen a few "recipes" for home-made disinfectants with vinegar and other things - would this sort of thing be OK for weekly use in the hutch? The wood is treated, but I'd be worried about it soaking in and I don't want my girls to have a vinegary house!

Sorry if this has been asked before, I had a good search through but couldn't find anything specifically on hutches/wood in general.

I use Genie pet disinfectant that i buy online. I can't comment on wether using vinegar makes hutches smell as i only use it for my bunnies litter trays :)

Hi Flowergirl, I have two boys in a hutch and the pong was awful when the weather got really hot, even tho they have a permanent run and I change the hutch every 2 days completely.

I found once the hutch got wet with wee it just stank and you could not get the smell out and attracted flies. I use 'Keep it Clean' from the farm shop which cost 4 quid for a spray bottle of it and it does work but you have to use loads and let it soak in - and now its rainy weather where do you put the piggies while the hutch is trying to dry out naturally?

So instead I used some old floor vinyl in the bottom of the hutch (being careful that the edges didnt stick up so the piggies could chew it), and its much better now, its easier and quicker to clean and you dont use as much spray (saving money), and because you are cleaning vinyl rather than wood the wee does not soak in, it smells loads better, and dries loads quicker and I'm sure the hutch has a lot less bacteria in it now (and the piggies can get back in almost straight away - mine love it when they are changed and get all excited when I get the hay out).

Id say tho that you really need to stick to a 'pet' spray (or basic ingredients like vinegar etc), as some of the bacteria busting stuff that is for kitchens etc really get on my chest, so must be awful for piggies, whereas the proper pet stuff doesnt seem as bad, but I would recommend 'Keep it Clean' cos its a cleaner, deodrant and disinfectant in one, there is a website on the bottle www.russelrabbit.com xx

We have done the same(ish) - we have a correx box lining the bottom of the hutch so can just lift that out and empty, spray with vinegar / water and wipe then dry and put back in. It just means you dont get wee absorbing into the wood which I imagine could smell a bit.

Bob Martin's cage disinfectant.

I used that once and it really irritated my breathing so I dread to think what effect it must have on animals.

I use white vinegar most the time, I've tried lots of products but nothing gets rid of the white stains as well as the vinegar does.

Every so often I use Jeyes as its good at killing the 'nasties' but it has to be a nice day so it can dry thoroughly and ventilate well.

I also use keep it clean intermittantly - the lemon one is good at detering flies, or bephar deep clean.

I use Urine Off for my piggies cages... not sure if that's available in the UK though. I'm from Canada.

I've found since switching to newspaper with a layer of megazorb then hay on top, that my hutches don't get wet at all and that's a complete change twice a week.

Makes cleaning a heck of a lot easier. I just quickly give them a spritz and a wipe out. I'm using one from p@h at the minute, I've got an elderly rabbit too and really need to keep on top of the hutches this time of year, I don't want a case of flystrike on my hands.:)>>>
