Hi ^^

I've been wanting to change my guinea pigs outside hutch for a larger one for a while but now I've decided to actually go and buy one.
I was looking at a few but the one I really liked was a two story hutch.

It was advertised as a guinea pig/rabbit hutch but I was wondering are they really suitable for guinea pigs? I'm a little bit worried that one of them will fall through the hole in the floor!

Would it be safe for them or should I stick to a one story hutch? Or is there any way I can make it safer? Like adding a wall around the hole?

Any advice is greatly appreciated :(|)

Mine love the ramp, they have never fell down the hole. They think it is great running up and down, and it means you have four rooms instead of the usual 2. x

Thank you! ^^

I've always kept guinea pigs in one story hutches so I was a bit nervous about having them in a two story :))

Not all guinea pigs like the ramps and will use them. Ryli has overcome this by a fabric tunnel made by a member of the board. For more info, please pm her.

Thank you ^^

I'm still a bit concerned about that hole though :))
Would it be a good idea to put wire mesh up to stop them from walking right into it?

Lol, I'm probably over reacting about this

I have my boys in 2 storey hutches.
Only Neo and Ash use the ramps, and they love them! Always zooming up and down.
I havent tried phoenix yet, but stevie, comanche and travis dont use the ramps.
Depends on the piggies i suppose.
Like you I was concerned they would fall, but no accidents! *touch wood* lol x

The two story hutches seem to be everywhere now. I suppose if piggies were prone to falling down them then they wouldn't have taken off like that have :))

Well, time to measure up that hutch ^^

My piggies have never fallen through the hole ..... not that I know of anyway! We had problems with the ramp and Helen from Cosy Cavies made me a tunnel, I have attached the link, if you scroll down you will see the story!

Hope this helps :)

I am in the process of kitting out my new two storey hutches with a ramp tunnel, banister rail round the top and little holders to stop the treat dish from being knocked over. I got some ply wood 2 inches wide and cut two pieces to make an L shape then screwed it into the floor around the hole using 3 little blocks to hold it together. Just for my own peace of mind but it looks quite nice I think.

That's a brilliant idea, will she make them for anyone? Do you know how much they cost? I've just bought a very large two tier hutch to give as much room as possible and like this idea so it avoids any potential problems.

That's cool. How many do you keep in there?

We have a hutch run set up but only 2 of the four have figured it out. They ALL use the ramps in the inside cage so I know they don't object they just haven't figured it out or don't like what it's covered with (the hutch roofing material)

we have three i there, but sometimes we let george in there, but he doesn't know how the ramps work!, it took a while to teach our piggies how to do that! and they love it, i think it's about 3 square meters of space!

I have bought a chicken coop for my piggies. there is plenty of space in the sleeping area. The actual ramp is a gentle slope, and wide, so piggies can't fall off. Plus they have got a lot of space on the ground to run around. Although, it's been raining since ....:)

You can email Helen and she will ask for some measurements, then she will give you a price, mine was about £15 and that was with postage too ..... they are fab and she makes them lovely.
