My two boys have been together since october 2008 and they have got on fine, but now tonight Joey who is the dominant one keeps humping Gizmo. He only ever done this when i first had them and introduced them in 2008. Why is he doing this now?

They are about 2 years old now. Gizmo lets Joey hump him but he keeps going back for more. They are out for floortime and I'm afraid to put them in their cage. :{ Joey does teeth chatter and squeak lots but no fighting, Joey holds Gizmo down to hump him and he stays their, no wounds have been inflicted. I'm so confused on why he is doing this.

Nothing has changed only they had a new c&c cage 2 weeks ago and they have been ok in it.

Also when i pick Joey up he is very vocal and squeaks loudly, i hardly ever usually hear him.

Please help.

He may have a sudden surge of hormones; hopefully it is over again in a day or so.

As long as Gizmo is OK with it I wouldn't worry too much.

Is this normal in males?

I'm just so worried as they have never done this before.

Gizmo is fine he does run away but then he lets Joey hump him and then all is quiet and then it starts again.

He's humped him about 10 times now.

All is quiet now they had some dill off me but they are still out on the floor.

I'm a little scared of putting them in their cage. :(

this is what Tom and Jerry did yesterday but it got to the point where jerry was biting tom in the face and becoming nasty with him and poor tom was clearly upset by this it got to the point where i have now had to separate them:( i did try to reintroduce them after half an hour to give jerry chance to calm down but as soon has they were together jerry was humping him again and even started to chatter and jump and bite his face so now they are both in separate cages:( but these 2 are 6mths old not 2yrsxxx

That's what i cant figure out, why they are doing it now. They are definalty not babies they are adults as they were about 8months when i got them in 2008.

Joey has stopped the humping for now and he is sleeping/eating hay and Gizmo is eating hay too. They are still out in the floor.
Gizmo does not stand upto Joey when he humps him he just lies their. I do hope it just because Joey hormones are high.

It will break my heart if i have to seperate them.

:(

Claire I don't think this applies to these boys as they have both been living happily for over a year together and have both been though the hormones the 6 month old was probably going though his hormone stage.

It is a good thing that gizmo is not reacting :)

Joey has just walked passed Gizmo and done nothing just sniffed him.

I do hope humping is over now. I never thought i would be writing a thread about them humping at this age.

I'm going to keep a close eye on their weights and make sure that Gizmo is happy with Joey around, Gizmo did do a popcorn just now. :)

Oh Lordie Claire. mallethead I hope Ben and Jeremey didnt see 6)

Sam I hope it's okay now.

How have they got on since you posted about this? Back to normal?

Well i stayed downstairs with them last night and all was quiet. Joey hasnt mounted/humped Gizmo since about 8.15pm last night.

They are eating their veg together now.

I hope that Joey was just having a hormonal day and that he will be good from now on. :)

I'm going to keep a close eye on them. Its just odd on why he started doing it in the first place?

What are the signs for bullying just so i know and can look out for them? Is it things like guarding the food/veg bowls etc, he hasnt done any of this.
Also what is the typical signs of dominance eg the dominant one always sleeping in the same area and not leting the other one sleep in it, is this normal?

I just had a read of the dominance thread and it does say maybe the time of the year may cause boars to mount the other, eg spring as thats when they are getting ready to mate, to show the other that he is still boss.

I really do hope all will stay back to normal now.

I sent a email to my local rescue and this is what she sent me:

Hello Sam

It sounds as though the new space triggered a dominance display, often a humping session! Don't worry too much as it's quite normal and as long as the submissive accepts the 'attention' and doesn't lose their patience and give the dominant a slap in the face then it's unlikely to ever become anything to worry about.

It's quite normal for boys to choose a bit of space rather than cuddle up together, the more space boys have the less stress they feel.

I know it can be worrying when behaviour changes but it all sound normal and they are obviously spoilt rotten, just as they deserve!
