Hi

I noticed my 2 and a half year old male guinea pig had some lumps in line with the shaft of his penis so I gently got his penis out and there was a HUGE white lump. He was very uncomfortable but fine after I removed it. I couldn’t see the other two lumps so left them.

I started looking up about this as have never seen it before on him and think it is a big build up of smegma?

The lumps are completely hard, white, horrible smell and grow around his penis. They are onlay visible when you extrude his penis.

I’ve been checking him every few days / every week and there is always another huge lump there to remove. I don’t understand why he’s suddenly producing so much?

I just cleaned him now and got another huge one out. I can still feel more lumps but they aren’t visible around his penis yet, but he was very uncomfortable and squeaking a lot when I touched his skin where they are under.

He’s acting fine and wee’s and poo’s fine but I know these huge lumps can’t be very comfortable for him and I don’t understand what’s causing them. I don’t also like cleaning his penis too much as it might make it sore, but don’t want to leave these huge lumps in there.

I have attached 3 photos of different lumps I have removed from his penis. They are quite large lumps, maybe the size of a chick pea.

If anyone has any advice on why he’s producing so much / if it’s definitely a build up of smegma or something else?

I will probably take him to the vets to get checked as well.

Hi

I agree, that looks rather like a sperm rod (dried semen fluid) to me. Please have a look at our Boar Care guide link. You will find it very helpful.

Looks more like sperm to me too. I do have one boar who gets a lot of smegma round the penis but it looks more dry/chalky than that. It wraps round rather than being a lump.

Okay thank you! I will have a look at the guide.

Is he just producing a lot of semen fluid because he’s a young boy / doesn’t live with girls either so not mating etc?

And is it okay to be cleaning his penis so regularly or will it cause it to get sore? All I do it gently extrude the penis and pull the lump out, it’s right at the front and easy to remove. The lump seems to grow around the penis.

I don’t know if this is even possible but could it be possible as I’ve never cleaned his penis before now - so for 2 years he’s had semen fluid build up and dry into these big lumps? That’s why there’s always so many and I can always feel some higher up penis shaft?

I’ve removed tiny sperm rods that were protruding from the external part of the penis before but never extruded his penis so he may have had these lumps building for a while ? Or is that not possible, would they be recent dried fluid?
