So I've been using towels & fleece as bedding for the past 2 or 3 days and as far as cleaning out is going, it is great. I am poo-picking twice a day (one piggy) but the hay is getting stuck to the towels & fleece. My mum won't let me put the towels in the washing machine with the hay stuck to it still. I've cleaned him out today and had to hand wash the towels/fleece but the hay. How can I prevent hay from getting everywhere? It is in a hayrack but of course as he eats it, it is falling down into the cage.

As I write this, I'm now thinking that perhaps I could put the hay into something like a small cat litter tray rather than in the hay rack. Would this work?

I'm worried my mum is going to make me re-home him because of the mess :(

I have a separate hay loft upstairs in my C&C and only use newspaper underneath as hay does go everwhere. If you dont have the option of a 2 storey hutch/cage then i am afraid i can offer no advice. If you do get a tray i may help, but i put my hay in a tray and my pigs always drag the hay out of it xx

As far as washing goes, we put ours in an old duvet cover - that way the hay doesn't get on the machine. Worth a go?

Do you have a garden and washing line? If so you could try pegging the fleeces up and beating them? It gets a fair bit off but not everything in my experience. Alternatively use an old or cheap pillowcase or duvet cover to wash them in

Thanks for suggestions. We don't have a garden (live in flat) so everything has to drip dry (no dryer either!)

I recently gave fleece ago, my washing machine is pap though as its left hair all over the blinking fleece lol, I did put it in a quilt cover and no hay got in my machine, as for keeping hay from going everywhere mine have an upstairs area but a heavy tray might work x
