Hi,

We have recently moved house into our own place from a rental and the piggies now have their own shed. They’re just in hutches for now inside the shed but looking to get integrated enclosures built.

I am concerned that come summer time the shed will get too hot for them. We are going to be insulating it but not sure what the right kind of insulation is to keep them cool in summer? I am more concerned about that than keeping warm in winter as this is possible though other means (heat pads, heaters etc) and we haven’t had any problems in this regard yet despite some colder nights.

The shed has a brick back and right side and a wooden front and left side with a standard shed roof (see photos for reference.) I think the sun hits the garden in the morning/early afternoon.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Mine are also in my shed. It is insulated with silver foil.
I will be very honest - I can’t keep them cool. They have to come out on warm days. The sun hits mine most of the day though but even now it is 6 degrees outside with the sun on the shed, With the door closed it is 15 degrees in there. In a couple of hours I’ll have to open the top half of the stable door for some ventilation. Its obviously fine right now but you can easily see how 20 degrees outside and my shed is easily 35+ degrees.
I have an outer stable door, with the ability to have either half of the whole door with mesh in it. It gives ventilation and keeps air flowing to a certain extent but come mid summer nothing I do is enough, and it is far too hot for them to stay in.

Thanks for your reply. Our shed does seem to stay around the outside temperature or a couple of degrees over so I’m not sure if that’s the brick construction. Obviously I will keep a very close eye on the temperature as it starts to get warmer.

Would you mind sharing a link of the insulation you used and a photo of the stable door as this might be a good idea for ours 🙂

You will just have to see how it goes.

This is my stable door. I can have half mesh or full mesh.

The insulation is just a generic roll. I have stapled it all over the inside and ceiling. It is also on the floor underneath their cages

That’s really helpful thank you I’ll show them to my father in law who will be building the shed and see if he can make something similar 👍
