my guinea pig suddenly seems to be quite poorly. she is very still and her breathing is very laboured and raspy. she has a wet nose and is very quiet and not like herself. we have a vet appointment at twelve today but i was wondering if there was anything i could do for her while we wait. she is shivering a lot and i just want to make her feel as comfortable as possible. although she definitely still does have an appetite and ate all her food this morning.

If you are very worried could you ask if the vets could possibly see her earlier?

Try to keep her warm but not hot. Sorry she’s not well, hopefully it will soon be 12. Good luck.

Hi!

Do you have microwaveable snugglesafe pads? They are best at a lower heat so they are warm but not hot. A warm fleece blanket to snuggle into may also help - as may your own body.

Fingers very firmly crossed for your little girl and you!

hi everyone! thank you so much for the help in my last thread. we took nola to the vets and we had to wait for a couple of hours to see one but the visit was quick. they gave her antibiotics and said it was a respiratory infection. we had to separate her from her daughter pikki and they hate it 😭 we have nola in our smaller indoor cage now with a comfy bed area. luckily pikki doesn’t seem to have it and is her normal healthy self. we have no idea where this came from, it was very sudden and there were no signs beforehand to show she was getting ill. i just hope she starts to feel better soon!43E8AF82-BCD2-40E6-BFF6-7BD4FB70A6A3.webp

Glad to hear you got her seen. I would say don’t separate them as doing so can also cause them stress. The daughter had already been exposed to it, if that’s the thinking of your vet.

Hope she starts improving soon:wub:

thank you! ❤️
i wanted to keep them together, so we asked our vet if that was possible but they said to keep them apart until the antibiotics were finished. we brought pikki in at night in another cage and put them next to each other so they can smell and talk to each other, but nola doesn’t move much right now and didn’t come up to see pikki bless her

Why does the vet day they should be separated while she is on antibiotics? Sorry, it’s probably simple but I’m stumped 😁 as I said she’s already been exposed so I would just leave them together.

:agr:
We see posts from people whose vets have told them go separate but it really isn’t advisable. As social animals, being alone and separated is very stressful to them and stress lowers the immune system. Unless there is a much more compelling reason to keep them apart then I really would put them back together - keeping them separated just because she is on antibiotics is not a reason to separate

Is she eating hay for herself?

I’m going to ask our moderators to merge this thread with the other on the same issue so that we have all the information in one place. @VickiA @Lady Kelly

Threads merged.
I would keep them both together indoors. There is no real benefit to separating them and it will stress both of them to be apart. Hope the antibiotics work soon. Is she eating enough? Are you weighing daily and topping up With a syringe feed if necessary
