Teenage Guinea Pig
I have not tried this yet, I found it on another guinea pig forum. I take no credit for the recipe. thegreenists.com is where the other person on the forum got it. I do not know if it will work, but by what I have heard it is fine.
1. Shred newspaper in a paper shredder and collect shreds in an unused litter box.
2. Soak the paper shreds in warm water mixed with a few squirts of gentle, biodegradable dish soap. The paper wont completely clean, but the water will turn gray.
3. Drain the water and repeat the soaking process without the soap.
4. Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the wet paper. Now, knead it into the mixture, but you might want to wear gloves to avoid getting messy.
5. Squeeze as much of the remaining moisture out as you can.
6. Crumble over a screen and let it dry for a few days. You can also crumble it in one layer and flip it half way through the drying process.
I will be trying this. If anyone else tries it tell me how well it works on absorbency, odor controll, etc. I hope this will replace all the bags of carefresh and save me money I can use on the piggies!
