Hiya

I have recently put together a C&C cage (2x4) using the connectors to connect it together. It seems pretty sturdy.

Anyway, I want to add a hay loft to it but I don't know how, as there is nowhere to connect the grids onto the existing connectors on the cage that is already there (if that makes sense?).

Do I just build it separately and then add it onto the top with cable ties?

Thanks :)

How big do you want your hay loft to be? It depends on how many grids you have left too! :) If you tell me that, I can help you with some steps :) I made a 2x4 for my friend with a 2x1 hay loft which worked quite well, but obviously you can make it bigger if you want to.

I would like to make a 2x1 one :)

Thanks.

You'll need to grids for the base of the hay loft. First cable tie these two grids together with about 3 cable ties spread along the grids. Just like below -
where the blue dots are place the cable ties and connect to another grid.

Now you should have two grids connected with cable ties. Pull the cable ties really tight and then snip off the ends if you wish. Decide at what height you want to place the hay loft and connect to the 2 x 4 C&C cage. You can put it at the top or you can place it lower. If you are using correx however, what I did for my friend was to place it about 3 inches/squares lower than the top of the C&C cage, connect it there and then score and cut correx. This meant that it was left with a little tray for the correx to sit in. I hope that makes sense!

If it doesn't I'll find some piccies for you as I took some of her cage - it looks pretty much identical to mine - just smaller.

To connect these grids, use cable ties again to tie around the bar in which you are going to use as the floor of the hay loft. Use three for each side. This means you will use 12 cable ties.

I'll post some pictures of where you shall have to place the cable ties on the two connected grids.

Just imagine those two grids are connected in the pictures! Yours will be but the dots are just where the cable ties should go. I found that three cable ties connecting each side worked well, meaning that two support either side of the grid and one in the center for extra support.

Thank you for your idea, it is a good idea and I was in the middle of doing it...but then my 'geni-mouse' of a OH came over and showed me how to connect them using just the connectors, something that I couldnt figure out how to do on my own lol mallethead

Thank you so much though for taking the time to post the pics and explain how to do it :)):))

That's fine! I'd actually be quite interested to know how you connect them with the connectors ( just curious :) ) as I couldn't seem to do mine that way. Hope the hay loft goes down well with pigs when they try it out.

Mine are connected with connectors :) I have the flat side circular ones with a cross on the other side if that makes sense and if you fiddle with it a bit they do connect together. This is the first C&C I made:

Not sure if it is very clear but hope that helps. I always use cable ties though to make sure it is safe
