I am never out of this forum unfortunately!
Germaine has tiny brown mites all along her rear! Never saw them wednesday when I was grooming her but today they are obvious! No signs of discomfort from her but I want to clear them as soon as possible.
1. How do i treat them?
2. Should I treat them all (cagemates)?
3. Can humans catch them? Feeling itchy just looking at them!
Thanks!

Hi! The best way of getting rid of hay/fur mites or static lice is a lice shampoo. Gorgeous guineas do a good one; it's called lice'n'easy. Please bathe all piggies as this variety of parasites often arrives in the hay and can make the rounds between the piggies.

Parasites are species specific, so you cannot catch them. Static lice are also the mildest skin parasite piggies can be affected by as they sit on the hair and not on or in the skin.

First you need to be sure they definately are static lice/mites. Have a look here and it should help you http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/parasitic.html
If you definately sure it is static lice then don't worry to much about it. Static mites don't harm the guinea at all cos they don't suck the blood like other parasites do. You can get special shampoo to get rid of them like lice'n'easy from gorgeous guineas for example. Or alternatively what I've done before is use wipes because my piggies didn't like to be bathed, like these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Petlife-Wip...d=1392983842&sr=8-2&keywords=Guinea+pig+wipes th work really well.

They are definitely static mites! They are seriously creepy too. They look like dust. I trimmed a piece of her hair and looked at it under a magnifying glass and they were crawling toward the tips of the hair! I have checked the other two and sure enough they both had some buried in their thick teddy hair near their bums! One was just in the vets too so I don't feel bad that I didn't spot them as neither did she.
I've ordered some lice and easy. I am sooo itchy now thinking about them! Argh
