Hello All :)

My little 3 month old cali boy Ludo had an abscess lanced and drained yesterday. I am struggling to flush it out.

How much pressure do I put on it, is it a case of putting the syringe into the hole and filling it with saline?

It such an odd thing- do you squeeze until something comes out.? He takes his painkillers and antibiotics very well I just feel like I am failing keeping the abscess clean and ready to heal.

Hi. I’ve never flushed an abscess but I have flushed an infected eye socket after an eye removal which was the same principle. My vet gave me a needle to attach to the end of the syringe as this allows the wetter to come out faster and at a higher pressure. You need to squeeze and get as much pus out as possible. You also need to remove any scabs that form so the hole remains open

I have flushed out abscesses and the advice @Claire W has given is the same as my vet gave me.
It’s not much fun for you or the piggy so make sure you have plenty of bribes to hand.
Hope it heal soon

I have experience of a tooth root abscess. Great advice given above. I flushed it three times a day for two weeks. Pick off any scabs to keep it open as long as possible. I started using the syringe with the needle on to force water exactly where it was needed but because the wound was by Pepper’s face and he was a squirmy pig I was worried I would stab him so I took off the needle and put the plastic end of the syringe into the hole and flushed it that way. Good luck
