Hi we got Guinea pigs a couple of days ago, I’m worried we might get rats and would love some advice on how to avoid getting them ( we’ve replaced our shed and there was an old nest of some description underneath)

Never had the problem, we have a cat. ;)

Firstly my shed is based on a full concrete platform and then there is the wooden pillars the floor sits on. It’s mostly blocked off however one of the main things is to keep the outside of the shed pristine clear of hay and such like. I used my wheelie bin outside of the shed half door to dump the waste making sure I don’t drop any. If I do, then I sweep up leaving nothing behind.
I also don’t have any bird food in the garden as this will attract mice and rats into the garden more so.

I would add the cable in the photo above us armoured so no teeth are getting through that.
All good is stored in closed containers including most of the hay (wheelie bins).
I know dogs can smell the pigs as a friend walks by every day and her dog always sniffs under the garden gate, but there is nothing I can do about that - they have amazing noses!

A nice cheap way is to save any drinks cans you have, cut them open and flatten them out and staple them round the bottom of your shed. We do this at the stables all the time to keep rats out the barn. I also have metal bins for all my animal feed, I keep pet rats and they cage destroy plastic in next to no time.

My power cable goes in over head height to stop nibbling. but that was guinea pigs and rabbits. ;)
