As some of you may be aware, I'm planning a cage expansion. The choice is 5x2 or 3x4 up from our current 2x4 set up. I'm leaning more towards a 3x4 but are these practical to clean or do you have to pull it away from the wall and go to the other side to catch those stray pigs/ poops at spot clean time? Is it hard to get a big enough bit of correx for a 3x4? My set up is raised to store the pig stuff underneath so stepping in to sweep isn't really an option.

I've already ruled out 2x2 loft for practicality reasons. Which should I go for? 5x2 or 3x4?

Personally, I love my loft. It's not too hard to clean and it keeps the hay from taking over the cage for the most part.

I have a 3 x 4 I climb in it to clean the wall side, I can't pull it out as it has a table standing in it with another cage on top! Not the most practical arrangment but the only way I could fit two cages into the room. We taped two pieces of corex together.
Ours is 3 x 4 down one side but goes into an alcove so has a 2 x 2 loft and cuts across to 3 grids down the other side. I preferred the look of it when it was 5 x 2 but we couldn't fit both cages in that way. I love the loft and so do the piggys.SUNP0001.webp

I'd go for a x2. But I'm short and I couldn't reach the back of a x3!

My cage is also raised; an L shaped 7x2 and I have to stand on a stool to spot clean and I have to use a brush to get to the far corner !

This is my 1x3 with a 1x1 loft. I realize this is way to small for him. I am going to expand it this month. Although he does get floortime every other day, time outside once a week, and spends time with my other boars, it's too small. I do really like the cage though. It's easy to clean and looks good.

This is my 1.5x4.5 for my duo. It's easy to clean, but not very big. They get the same amount of floortime for my other boar, too.

A friend had a 3x4 or something similarly square (forget the exact dimensions) and had the same problems as above with regards to cleaning (but is also quite short). I often stand in my piggy's C+C anyway to reach the back corner (it backs into an alcove), so i don't think that would bother me as much.

I also tried a 3 x 5, but unless you can easily get to both sides of it (mine was against a wall) it was really hard to clean along the back (and I am pretty tall).
It's a shame as I loved the extra space, but it was just too difficult to keep clean.

I've recently removed my 2x2 loft as it was too hard to clean under the back area and instead my cage is now extended into a 9x2 which is divided in half for 2 couples. I didn't go 3 wide as I don't think I'd be able to clean it properly along the back row as it's against a wall.
