Just trying to prepare a budget for when our new friends arrive in January. How much hay are 2 pigs likely to get through in a month?

if I use hay as bedding should I buy 2 different types? Any recommended suppliers?

I get hay from my local farm as I am lucky enough to have one that supplies really good quality hay about 30 minutes drive away. A big field bale costs me around a fiver and keeps my 5 going for about 8 weeks. I use the same hay for bedding as I give them for eating. I keep the eating hay separate in two hay feeders at all times. They still prefer to scoff the stuff they wee and poop on though:vom:. I have come to the conclusion that it must taste nicer! I did exactly the same for my rainbow piggies too and they lived for 5 years.

I'm inner city London so no farms near me unfortunately! not sure I have space to store a massive bale like that anyway! If I get a 5kg bag - how long do you reckon that will last roughly?

With 2 pigs I’d say a couple of months maybe

A lot will depend on how you use your hay o be honest.
For 4 guinea pigs I get through 5kgs of hay every 2 weeks!
But both cages have a hay tray filled with it - this catches a lot of poops and most of their wee, but also 'wastes' a lot of hay - and this is changed every second day.
I also feed a 'special' hay in hay bags, which are fixed about their hay trays - no waste at all.

Well done for planning ahead though.
You will find your own way to feed and manage hay as you go along.

It really depends on how you feed it and how much you put in each time. 3 kgs used to last my 4 around 2 weeks. I fed it in hay trays in their hutches and changed the trays everyday. I would say you are looking at it lasting at least a month but could last longer. You will have to play it by ear.

I order 9.5kg bags from hay and straw online. These bags last my 4 a little while but I do use more in winter to help keep them warm.

I find alfalfa King Timothy Hay is far superior to anything l have used in the past
The only problem is that the supplies are limited and the 1.8kg bags are all that is redabaly available from pets at home ect
There are 25 lb bales are by far better value , but the quality is not to good at the moment !
