So i feed my pigs half a cup of pets at home nuggets everyday, my the morning their bowls are almost empty but not completley. They also ge their usualy veggies and unlimited hay but i wondered how much pellet food should they have? (for piggies a little over a year old) also they are both lone piggies as they hate a serious fight and sam got ingured and wouldnt go near pip or trust him. I hate seeing them alone but at the time i couldnt pair them together nor could i buy 2 more pigs to pair them with :( the situation is sorted now but what I'm saying is the food in their bowls is all for them and there's no other pigs that can eat out of it or anything :) x

Guinea pigs do not really need more then 30g of pellets a day. I am sorry your two fell out. Can they live side by side so they can interact?

I was actually talking to someone in the pets at home about this and they said not to feed guinea pig nuggets/pellets as they are high in fat.

Under six months of age, pigs can have unlimited pellets as they need that good calcium to grow - I use Oxbow Essentials Young Guinea Pig Food. After six months of age, they only need 1/8 of a cup of pellets per pig. You can use 1/4 cup in one bowl if you have two pigs together (which I know we all strive for, if not more!)
I will be switching to Oxbow Essentials Adult Guinea Pig Food soon as my pigs are close to the 6 month mark.

Also I'd like to say I'm sorry about any measurements I post because I know many of you are in the UK while I'm in the US and we don't weigh a whole lot with scales we mostly just use measuring cups/spoons and things like that :/ sorry. I'm sure you could google a converter!

I sprinkle a small amount of science selective in the cage for my two adults, so they have to work to find them. The youngsters get 2 lots of 40g per day, it has always gone.

must make sure I am measuring my nuggets out properly, they are always devoured, and I have been putting a bit more in because its getting colder and wanted to ensure they have enough energy to keep warm - but I really must make sure they don't become overweight!

@Wiebke
my two boys are around 2 years old - do adult males need more? - should they be on the 20g amount or should they be on the 10g because they are older? cheers! :)

I give my indoors adults about 10g (ca. half a handful) per day in view of the fairly high calcium content in my pellets; my piggies' weight is stable and they have a good heft, but you can give 20g as well, which is roughly a handful. If a piggy has been ill and lost weight, I may give a bit more until the weight is going back up again. If your piggies are outdoors or in a cooler room, I would up the amount as they will burn more calories to stay warm.

Thanks Wiebke, I feed them burgess excel nuggets, all the hay they can sit, sleep and munch on, and their daily greens so that amount should be enough for them. That seems about the amount of nuggets I am feeding them, but I just must make sure I use the same thing to measure them out each time, and not get complacent and just pour from the bag :lol!: thanks again! :cake:

You get the feel for how much; usually you only need to measure once to see whether you are roughly in the right area. ;)
