I have been raising some hammies and I know that they need about 2-3 inches of bedding because they are natural diggers, but i cannot find any info on this that properly answers how much piggies need.

I have some aspen bedding but my question is, how deep should i put it down when the new girls arrive this weekend?

Also, I see a lot of pics with only bedding in half of the cage, this question may sound stupid, but why is that? is there a problem with going the full length of the cage with bedding?

Hi i would put enough down that looks comfy to you, not too much though as if you have it too deep it'll make it hard for the pigs to walk about. I would put a little extra in their sleeping area and where the hay will be as you'll find this will be where they are most likely to do their wees and poos so you want enough down to soak it up from the bottom but for it to still be dry on the top.

Some people only put half a bed down to make it easier to clean out. I used to put paper down then only put lots of bedding in the sleeping bit, then everyday i'd brush all the poos off the paper and replace it when needed. I'd also top the bedding area up and then do a half a bed change half way through the week then do a full bed change at the end of the week. Now my boys are on vet bed which covers three quarters of the hutch and then they have trays filled with hay and some cardbord boxes filled with hay on the side without vet bed. They get poo picked three times aday and the hay beds get changed every other day then a full clean out once a week sometimes twice aweek. hope this helps :)

Really sorry, should learn to read!

mine live on newspaper and hay, I just top up the hay each day so they always have enough to hide under

( still it is a very good hamster site, so friendly!)

Thank you both :<> . Ok, then I will gage the amount of bedding based on how easy it looks to get around for them. I think that will mean keeping it kind of shallow. I still am unsure as to who my girls will be at this point, I just hope the two that I adopt will get along well.

Would toilet paper be good in the bed area? I know hammies love to shred it up for nests.

Yes that is a great hamster site, my main one tends to be hamsterhideout.com for them. :) they actually lead me to this forum a few days ago (been lurking in the background).

Guinea pigs dont nest, so this wouldnt be good for them like is for hamsters. :)

In my opinion the best bedding for piggies is definatly fleece, however if you school wood shavings they only need to be an inch or so thick.

If you adopt piggies from a rescue they will be bonded, therefore unlikely to fall out :)
