Thankyou but I think you are wrong as the dimensions would be 20 square ft, 19ish if you take out the space for the ramp connecting the two floors! It's not for me, it's for an ill informed friend, just trying to give her the best advice really.
5ft x 2ft is the recommended minimum for 3 pigs - and i would stick to it housing 3 pigs only. The recommended minimum is based on a single level and any additional levels are only classed as additional space and should not be counted towards overall living space.
My first boar was living in a 4ft x 2ft double tier hutch and as soon as we added a cage mate it became obvious that it wasn't big enough. The top tier of any double hutch will have a large section cut out to accommodate a ramp - you then don't get anywhere near 5ft x 2ft of run space on the top level. Add to this the fact that some pigs wont use a ramp and you can really only count the bottom level as adequate living/run space.
5ft x 2ft double would be ok for 3 sows - but you are only sticking to MINIMUM sizes - if you can go bigger then i would certainly be giving them more space - you can never give them too much space when it comes to pigs
I'd say three (that's sows not boars, if your friend has boars best stick to just 2), the ramps really do take up a lot of space which is unfortunate and some piggies just don't take to walking up and down them. If the hutch was just split into two top and bottom I'd say four, two in each layer but that might be a bit ambitious. As I have learnt from personal experience the bigger the better, the piggies will thank you for it!
Thanks everyone I was thinking of 3 sows max as I doubt they'd be getting much free range time! Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on it, thankyou!
