How many guinea pigs should be housed in this hutch, ideally? Looking to get all girls most likely. It's the Summer Lodge from Pets at Home:

What do you think, 2 or 3 girls?

Probably wouldn't want to push it to 5. 3 or 4 would be fine for me, if that's enough space for them. Don't want them to be too crowded :)

That should be fine. At one point i had 5 girls in a smaller two storey indoor house and they were ok, and they got lots of attention and time out in the house and garden. Theyre now a bigger herd in a huge converted indoor house and C&C run, they love it.

I have an older version of this hutch and 4 would be a nice number to have in it. I've got a pair on top and two mums and teeny babies on the bottom (until the babies are a tad bigger so they can move in with my herd). When they have moved out it'll be two separate pairs. With that hutch you have the option to keep the group or pairs should something happen with the piggies you chose to get.

It's a nice hutch :).

Oh good! We'll probably get 4 then, as they'll have a lot of time and attention in the house :))

thats weird a while ago i posted a thread saying i had a 5ft x 2ft 2 floor hutch and got told 3 was a maximum! i personally think you should get 3, maybe you could check in a rescue *** if their was a group of 3/4 you could decide then.

I guess the opinions vary a lot here then! Honestly I am happy with anywhere from 2 to 4, I don't want them to be overcrowded. More cage cleanings isn't a problem, and they'd have a lot of time in the house with us. But I want them to be comfortable in their main living area.

Since I do want to go the rescue route, I will probably just take however many are bonded together. Which is more likely to be a lower number like 2 or 3 I'd guess :)

In my opinion I'd say 2 girls, because we (my family and I) ended up buying another cage for our two piggilys, because they had grown so much. It was an outdoor hutch that was quite big - with a massive run, too. You could prbably fit 3 in there, but it is up to you. Good Luck!:)

The recommended size for 3 pigs is 5ft x 2ft or rather 10 sq ft. That hutch has that bar about 1 sq ft for the ramp space, so you could have four or five depending on the size of the pigs - some breeds tend to grow bigger than others.

The more piggies you have, the more cleaning out you have to do though!

Personally I'm not a huge fan of trios; I've found that one piggy often gets left out. However if it's a bonded trio from a rescue then they would only rehome them if that wasn't an issue. Don't see all that many trios though.

You could consider rehoming two pairs and bonding them if you wanted more than two piggies - this is something a rescue might also be able to do for you if you ask. With that hutch if the bonding doesn't work then you can block the ramp off and have two nice sized hutches for the price of one. That said, bonding girls is...I don't want to say easy because that would give off the wrong impression... it's quite possible to do successfully. I've added quite a few pairs to each other and to a group and females tend to get on rather well with each other. Even in a herd situation the 'pairs' spend more time with each other but also enjoy the company of others too.

A rescue will be able to tell you which piggies would be suitable for living in a group so it's worth asking about if you want a small group of girls? :)
